The reconstruction of the signal from hadrons and jets emerging from the proton–proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and entering the ATLAS calorimeters is based on a three-dimensional topological clustering of individual calorimeter cell signals. The cluster formation follows cell signal-significance patterns generated by electromagnetic and hadronic showers. In this, the clustering algorithm implicitly performs a topological noise suppression by removing cells with insignificant signals which are not in close proximity to cells with significant signals. The resulting topological cell clusters have shape and location information, which is exploited to apply a local energy calibration and corrections depending on the nature of the cluster. Topological cell clustering is established as a well-performing calorimeter signal definition for jet and missing transverse momentum reconstruction in ATLAS.

We propose a new method for pileup mitigation by implementing \pileup per particle identication" (PUPPI). For each particle werst dene a local shapewhich probes the collinear versus soft diuse structure in the neighborhood of the particle. The former is indicative of particles originating from the hard scatter and the latter of particles originating from pileup interactions. The distribution offor charged pileup, assumed as a proxy for all pileup, is used on an event-by-event basis to calculate a weight for each particle. The weights describe the degree to which particles are pileup-like and are used to rescale their four-momenta, superseding the need for jet-based corrections. Furthermore, the algorithm exibly allows combination with other, possibly experimental, probabilis- tic information associated with particles such as vertexing and timing performance. We demonstrate the algorithm improves over existing methods by looking at jet pT and jet mass. We alsond an improvement on non-jet quantities like missing transverse energy.

This paper presents a new method of reconstructing the individual charged and neutral hadrons in tau decays with the ATLAS detector. The reconstructed hadrons are used to classify the decay mode and to calculate the visible four-momentum of reconstructed tau candidates, significantly improving the resolution with respect to the calibration in the existing tau reconstruction. The performance of the reconstruction algorithm is optimised and evaluated using simulation and validated using samples of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]+jets events selected from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy [Formula: see text], corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 [Formula: see text].

Reconstruction of hadronic decay products of tau leptons with the ATLAS experiment

This paper reports a measurement of the W+b-jets (W+b+X and W+b (b) over bar +X) production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. These results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1), collected with the ATLAS detector. Cross-sections are presented as a function of jet multiplicity and of the transverse momentum of the leading b-jet for both the muon and electron decay modes of the W boson. The W+b-jets cross-section, corrected for all known detector effects, is quoted in a limited kinematic range. Combining the muon and electron channels, the fiducial cross-section for W+b-jets is measured to be 7.1 +/- 0.5 (stat) +/- 1.4 (syst) pb, consistent with the next-to-leading order QCD prediction, corrected for non-perturbative and double-parton interactions (DPI) contributions, of 4.70 +/- 0.09 (stat) (+0.60)(-0.49) (scale) +/- 0.06 (PDF) +/- 0.16 (non-pert) (+0.52)(-0.38) (DPI) pb.

Measurement of the cross-section for W boson production in association with b-jets in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A scheme to calibrate energy depositions from hadrons based on calorimeter signals only and the observed shower topology is presented. Such a calibration scheme can be used to calibrate jets and the missing transverse energy in the ATLAS detector. Based on the cluster reconstruction an effective noise suppression is achieved. In a first step clusters are classified as electromagnetic or hadronic clusters. A weighting scheme corrects for the different e/π response in the ATLAS calorimeter. Dead material corrections and out of cluster corrections yield finally a signal which is rather close to the energy deposited by the final state particles in the ATLAS calorimeter. The constants and algorithms are derived using MC simulation of single pions and tested with pions and jets. First steps towards a validation of the scheme using testbeam data corresponding to the region |η |= 0.45 in ATLAS for pion energies from 20 GeV to 180 GeV are presented. Similar studies using testbeam data corresponding to 2.5 < |η | < 4.0 are in preparation. The deviation of the reconstructed energy from the beam energy is still at the level of few percents, as well as the difference between the data and MC expectation. The energy resolution is indeed improved, but again some difference between data and MC is observed. These effects can be attributed to a partial understanding of the proton contamination in the pion testbeam and to present shortcomings in the simulation. In addition alternative weighting schemes have been studied for single pions in testbeams, yielding similar results. These schemes need still to be compared to the standard method using MC jets prior to drawing any final conclusions.
