Successful Beam-Beam Tuneshift Compensation

Superconducting and cryogenic programs at IHEP were got a powerful upsurge in the early eighties of the last century within the framework of the UNK project. More than hundred model superconducting magnets and the pilot batch of UNK superconducting dipoles and four quadrupoles were produced and tested with the help of cryogenic test facilities built for this purpose. Cooperation with international scientific accelerator centers was developed in last ten years. Two superconducting magnetic systems of Electron Lens for the Tevatron accelerator (USA) were developed, manufactured and successfully brought into operation. 42 cryogenic electrical feed boxes of various types for Large Hadron Collider (Switzerland) were developed, produced and put into commission. Results of the development of fast-cycling superconducting magnets for the FAIR project (European Research Centre of Ions and Antiprotons, Germany) are discussed. Description of the largest in Russia cryogenic system for cooling with superfluid helium of superconducting RF separator for the new beam channel of the U-70 accelerator (Russia) is presented. Design and test results of current leads as well as a dipole magnet on basis of High Temperature Superconductor are reviewed.

The report overviews the recent SC-related R&D and production activity at IHEP. The scope of the paper extends over the items to follow. Two superconducting magnetic systems of Electron Lens for the Tevatron collider were developed, manufactured and successfully brought into operation. 42 cryogenic electrical feed boxes of various types for the Large Hadron Collider were developed, produced and commissioned. Results of development of fast-cycling SC magnets for the FAIR project are discussed. Operational experience acquired with the largest in Russia cryogenic system for cooling with a superfluid helium of SC RF separator for the beam transfer line #21from the U-70 machine is presented. Test-and-trial results with HTS current leads and dipole magnet employing Bi2223 as well as racetrack coils made of second-generation HTS are reviewed.

Production of superconducting equipment at ihep

The magnetic system of the Tevatron Electron Lens (TEL) was manufactured by IHEP and successfully tested in Fermilab. The system consists of seven super- conducting and four conventional magnets and provides solenoidal field to focus an electron beam, which collides with antiproton beam and, thus, compensates beam-beam effects in the Tevatron (1). Description of the system as well as basic calculated characteristics of the magnets are presented. Test results of the magnets including magnetic field measurements are reported.
