Das Auge des neugeborenen Menschen ist mit seinen Schutz- und Hilfsorganen fast vollkommen ausgebildet; unter dem Einflus des Lichtes (Salzmann) erfolgt die Markscheidenbildung im Sehnerven in den ersten 3 Wochen des extrauterinen Lebens (Bernheimer, C. H. Sattler), die Ausbildung der einzelnen Netzhautschichten ist bei der Geburt beendet, nur sind ihr Kernreichtum und damit ihre Dicke machtiger als beim Erwachsenen; der Abstand zwischen Papille und Fovea centralis ist bereits der gleiche wie beim Erwachsenen (Seefelder), aber die inneren Netzhautschichten sind im Bereich der schon deutlich erkennbaren Zentralgrube noch nicht vollig zuruckgebildet, sondern lassen deutliche Schichtung erkennen. Nach v. Hippel, Salzmann und Wolfrum erreicht die Fovea centralis erst einige Monate nach der Geburt ihre endgultige Gestalt. Die Pigmentepithelzellen sind im Auge des Neugeborenen niedriger (geradezu „endothelahnlich“ — Seefelder) als beim Erwachsenen; der Kern nimmt fast die ganze Dicke der Zelle ein, die Pigmentverteilung im Zelleib ist eine auffallend gleichmasige. In der Regenbogenhaut fehlt den Gefasen zunachst die Adventitia, sie bildet sich zwischen dem 2. bis 4. Jahre aus; die einzelnen Strange der Krause werden deutlicher und hoher, das Bindegewebe nimmt zu, bis etwa mit Abschlus des 10.
