Since the publication of the original paper on power system stability definitions in 2004, the dynamic behavior of power systems has gradually changed due to the increasing penetration of converter interfaced generation technologies, loads, and transmission devices. In recognition of this change, a Task Force was established in 2016 to re-examine and extend, where appropriate, the classic definitions and classifications of the basic stability terms to incorporate the effects of fast-response power electronic devices. This paper based on an IEEE PES report summarizes the major results of the work of the Task Force and presents extended definitions and classification of power system stability.

Definition and Classification of Power System Stability – Revisited & Extended

The emerging subsynchronous resonance (SSR) caused by the interaction of wind turbine generators (WTGs) with series compensation has aroused great concerns. For this particular issue, this paper is aimed to fill the gap between theoretical studies and actual observations. By analyzing the field data of 58 SSR events captured in a practical wind power system and examining the observed dynamics with previous theoretical results, the mechanism and characteristics of SSR are revealed in a more explicit and substantial way. The necessary conditions and dominant influential factors are identified and the underlying reasons are discovered. Theoretically derived as well as practically measured impedance models have demonstrated that the converter control of doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) produces negative resistance at the slip frequency and thus causes unstable SSR; while permanent magnet synchronous generators and self-excited induction generators are just passively engaged in those SSR incidents. The distribution of the oscillation frequency has also been examined with field measurements. It is discovered that WTGs at different locations participate into the same SSR mode and their frequencies are not fixed but keep changing with the time, the variation of grid topology, and the number of online generators.

Characteristic Analysis of Subsynchronous Resonance in Practical Wind Farms Connected to Series-Compensated Transmissions

This paper presents a damping control to mitigate sub-synchronous interactions (SSI) in doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbines connected to series-compensated lines. This issue has gained attention due to the recent SSI phenomena reported in DFIG wind farms located near series capacitors. Two approaches which add a supplementary damping control signal are compared: one of them, integrated to the grid-side converter, and the other one, to the rotor-side converter. The SSI damping controls are designed using a multi-input multi-output state-space methodology. This allows to easily tune a high performance controller using several measurements and control inputs. Small- and large-signal stability analyses, robustness aspects, impact of the supplementary controls on the system modes, and influence of different operating conditions on the SSI are also discussed. The obtained results show that the supplementary control is able to properly damp the sub-synchronous oscillations of DFIG wind turbines by updating the existing DFIG control systems without the inclusion of expensive additional damping devices, and reducing the risk of wind generation tripping.

Sub-Synchronous Interaction Damping Control for DFIG Wind Turbines

This paper investigates the impact of power grid strength and phase-locked loop (PLL) parameters on small signal stability of grid-connected doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind farm. Modal analysis of the grid-connected DFIG wind turbine under different operating conditions and various power grid strengths are investigated at first. Modal analysis results reveal that the DFIG connected to a weak grid may easily lose stability under the heavy-duty operating conditions due to PLL oscillation. The object of this paper is to identify the PLL oscillation mechanism as well as influence factors and propose a damping solution for this oscillation mode. A simplified linear system model of the grid-connected DFIG wind turbine is proposed for analyzing the PLL oscillation. Through the complex torque coefficients method and using this model, the oscillation mechanism and influence factors including the power grid strength and the PLL parameters are identified. To suppress this PLL oscillation, a mixed $H_2/H_{\infty }$ robust damping controller is proposed and designed for the DFIG. Electromagnetic transient simulation results of both single-DFIG system and multiply-DFIG system verify the correctness of the analysis results and effectiveness of the proposed damping controller.

Impact of Power Grid Strength and PLL Parameters on Stability of Grid-Connected DFIG Wind Farm

Emerging subsynchronous oscillation (SSO) issues in grid-connected wind farms have gained serious attention after several incidents occurred in the US and China. The temporal and spatial variation of wind speed, the diversified converter control structures, and the continuously varying number of in-service wind turbine generators (WTGs) greatly affect the equivalent impedance reflected by the wind farms. Such frequency-dependent equivalent impedance, as indicated by both theoretical analyses and practical experiences, has a huge impact on the mechanism and characteristics of SSO. In this regard, WTGs contribute to a more complicated type of SSO than those in conventional turbo-generators (CTGs). For instance, SSO in practical wind power systems can be triggered without the participation of series compensation in the transmission network. The emerging SSO phenomena observed in practical WTGs are relatively new, and cannot be properly interpreted by existing literature. This work will first review the historical development of SSO definitions and classification by IEEE, followed by discussions on recent incidents in practical wind farms due to the emerging SSO. Subsequently, new terminologies and classification of SSO are proposed with the aim to better understand SSO in large-scale wind integrated power systems. This paper offers a practical insight and a future perspective for the reader to properly deal with SSO associated with wind power systems.

Overview of emerging subsynchronous oscillations in practical wind power systems

A routine switching event in the Xcel Energy transmission system resulted in sustained oscillations between wind generators and the system connected through a series compensated line. This event led to the development of a new microprocessor based sub-harmonic protection relay that could detect such conditions and take preventative measures. This paper discusses a new technique to detect sub-harmonics in the range of 5 – 25 Hz using current and voltage level detectors, sub-harmonic calculations of individual sub-harmonics and total sub-harmonic distortion factor (TSHD) to generate an alarm and/or trip to isolate the faulty system. Various test cases are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the new technique.
