Changes in cystic fibrosis airway microbial community associated with a severe decline in lung function
Patrizia Paganin,Ersilia Fiscarelli,Vanessa Tuccio,Manuela Chiancianesi,Giovanni Bacci,P. Morelli,Daniela Dolce,Claudia Dalmastri,Alessandra De Alessandri,Vincenzina Lucidi,Giovanni Taccetti,Alessio Mengoni,Annamaria Bevivino +12 more
TL;DR: Overall, changes in CF airway microbial community associated with a severe lung function decline were detected, allowing us to define some discriminatory species as well as some discriminatory T-RFs that represent good candidates for the development of predictive biomarkers of substantial decline in lung function.
A Different Microbiome Gene Repertoire in the Airways of Cystic Fibrosis Patients with Severe Lung Disease
Giovanni Bacci,Alessio Mengoni,Ersilia Fiscarelli,Nicola Segata,Giovanni Taccetti,Daniela Dolce,Patrizia Paganin,P. Morelli,Vanessa Tuccio,Alessandra De Alessandri,Vincenzina Lucidi,Annamaria Bevivino +11 more
TL;DR: The microbiome of severely affected adults with CF seems to encode different mechanisms for the facilitation of microbial colonization and persistence in the lung, consistent with the characteristics of multidrug-resistant microbial communities that are commonly observed in patients with severe lung disease.
Upregulation of TMEM16A Protein in Bronchial Epithelial Cells by Bacterial Pyocyanin.
Emanuela Caci,Paolo Scudieri,Emma Di Carlo,P. Morelli,Silvia Bruno,Ida De Fino,Alessandra Bragonzi,Ambra Gianotti,Elvira Sondo,Loretta Ferrera,Alessandro Palleschi,Luigi Santambrogio,Roberto Ravazzolo,Luis J. V. Galietta +13 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that TMEM16A expression/function is upregulated in CF lung disease, possibly as a response towards the presence of bacteria in the airways.

Pyrosequencing Unveils Cystic Fibrosis Lung Microbiome Differences Associated with a Severe Lung Function Decline
Giovanni Bacci,Patrizia Paganin,Loredana Lopez,Chiara Vanni,Claudia Dalmastri,Cristina Cantale,Loretta Daddiego,Gaetano Perrotta,Daniela Dolce,P. Morelli,Vanessa Tuccio,Alessandra De Alessandri,Ersilia Fiscarelli,Giovanni Taccetti,Vincenzina Lucidi,Annamaria Bevivino,Alessio Mengoni +16 more
TL;DR: The analysis of correlation and anti-correlation networks showed the presence of antagonism and ecological independence between members of Pseudomonas genus and the rest of CF airways microbiota, with S patients showing a more interconnected community in S patients than in SD ones.

Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus small colony variant strains isolated from Italian patients attending a regional cystic fibrosis care centre.
P. Morelli,Alessandra De Alessandri,G. Manno,Anna Marchese,Marta Bassi,Raffaele Lobello,Laura Minicucci,Roberto Bandettini +7 more
TL;DR: Evidence of clonal spread of SCV strain among CF patients is found and the particular virulence and spreading ability of MR-SCV observed highlights the importance of accurate identification and susceptibility testing of these strains.
