We report on the determination of the astrometric, spin, and orbital parameters for PSR J1953+1846 A, a "black widow" binary millisecond pulsar in the globular cluster M71. By using the accurate position and orbital parameters obtained from radio timing, we identified the optical companion in Advanced Camera for Surveys/Hubble Space Telescope images. It turns out to be a faint (mF606W ≳ 24 mF814 ≳ 23) and variable star located at only ~0''".06 from the pulsar timing position. The light curve shows a maximum at the pulsar inferior conjunction and a minimum at the pulsar superior conjunction, thus confirming the association with the system. The shape of the optical modulation suggests that the companion star is heated, likely by the pulsar wind. The comparison with the X-ray light curve possibly suggests the presence of an intra-binary shock due to the interaction between the pulsar wind and the material released by the companion. This is the second identification (after COM-M5C) of an optical companion to a black widow pulsar in a globular cluster. Interestingly, the two companions show a similar light curve and share the same position in the color-magnitude diagram.

VisIVO is an integrated suite of tools and services specifically designed for the Virtual Observatory. This suite constitutes a software framework for effective visual discovery in currently available (and next-generation) very large-scale astrophysical data sets. VisIVO consists of VisiVO Desktop, a stand alone application for interactive visualization on standard PCs; VisIVO Server, a grid-enabled platform for high performance visualization; and VisIVO Web, a custom designed web portal supporting services based on the VisIVO Server functionality. The main characteristic of VisIVO is support for high-performance, multidimensional visualization of very large-scale astrophysical data sets. Users can obtain meaningful visualizations rapidly while preserving full and intuitive control of the relevant visualization parameters. This paper focuses on newly developed integrated tools in VisIVO Server allowing intuitive visual discovery with three-dimensional (3D) views being created from data tables. VisIVO Server can be installed easily on any web server with a database repository. We discuss briefly aspects of our implementation of VisiVO Server on a computational grid and also outline the functionality of the services offered by VisIVO Web. Finally we conclude with a summary of our work and pointers to future developments.

VisIVO: Integrated Tools and Services for Large-Scale Astrophysical Visualization

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is currently building the next generation, ground-based, very high-energy gamma-ray instrumentation. CTA is expected to collect very large datasets (in the order of petabytes) which will have to be stored, managed and processed. This paper presents a graphical user interface built inside a science gateway aiming at providing CTA-users with a common working framework. The gateway is WS-PGRADE/gUSE workflow-oriented and is equipped with a flexible SSO (based on SAML) to control user access for authentication and authorization. An interactive desktop environment is provided, called Astronomical & Physics Cloud Interactive Desktop (ACID). Users are able to exploit the graphical interface as provided natively by the tools included in ACID. A cloud data service shares and synchronizes data files and output results between the user desktop and the science gateway. Our solution is a first attempt towards an ecosystem of new technologies with a high level of flexibility to suit present and future requirements of the CTA community.

An Innovative Science Gateway for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Multi-color photometry is presented for a large sample of local ellipticals selected by morphology and isolation. The sample uses data from GALEX, SDSS, 2MASS and Spitzer to cover the filters NUV, ugri, JHK and 3.6mum. Various two-color diagrams, using the half-light aperture defined in the 2MASS J filter, are very coherent from color to color, meaning that galaxies defined to be red in one color are always red in other colors. Comparison to globular cluster colors demonstrates that ellipticals are *not* composed of a single age, single metallicity (e.g., [Fe/H]) stellar population, but require a multi-metallicity model using a chemical enrichment scenario. Such a model is sufficient to explain two-color diagrams and the color-magnitude relations for all colors using only metallicity as a variable on a solely 12 Gyrs stellar population with no evidence of stars younger than 10 Gyrs. The [Fe/H] values that match galaxy colors range from -0.5 to +0.4, much higher (and older) than population characteristics deduced from Lick/IDS line-strength system studies, indicating an inconsistency between galaxy colors and line indices values for reasons unknown. The NUV colors have unusual behavior signaling the rise and fall of the UV upturn with elliptical luminosity. Models with BHB tracks can reproduce this behavior indicating the UV upturn is strictly a metallicity effect.

We present the prototype of the new BaSTI web portal This portal is a GRID and Virtual Observatory integrated facility that allows to exploit the computational and storage capabilities of the EGEE-II GRID environment from a Virtual Observatory compliant web portal This facility provides data access to large sets of stellar evolution models, it is also able to create on-the-fly models submitting a large number of jobs on the GRID and collecting the results This portal is a first example of a service that is able to bridge two different GRID environments: the Virtual Observatory and the EGEE-II computational and data GRID

BaSTI: the Virtual Observatory meets the Computational Grid

In order to offer an intuitive but effective access to a growing number of cosmological simulations, we have developed the Italian Theoretical Virtual Observatory project (ITVO), as described by Pasian and colleagues in 2006. In this work we describe two Web portals as two ways to access and share complex data coming from numerical astrophysical simulations. We present a set of Web services aimed at offering services such as Simple Numeric Access (ProtocolSNAPSimple Numeric Access Protocol), as described by Gheller and colleagues in 2006, and Randomizers dealing with different data formats. The Web services technology allows us to run a particular task (a SNAP job, for instance) close to its data, avoiding an expensive data transfer.

The TVO Archive for Cosmological Simulations: Web Services and Architecture

In the first part of this work we describe a new relational database (DB) created for storing metadata of stellar evolution models for a large range of masses and initial chemical compositions, which allows searching for data by scientific quantities and useful parameters. These data users can access the DB and might select a good catalog of evolutionary tracks and/or isochrones for making scientific studies and comparison with observational data. We also present a new Web portal where users can download scientific data of interest. This work has been conduced within the Italian Theoretical Virtual Observatory (ITVO) project , which aims to register these theoretical data under the Virtual Observatory standard and provide a set of standard tools able to visualize and analyze observational and also theoretical data. In the second part of the work we describe the link between the Grid infrastructure and the Virtual Observatory services as delineated by G. Taffoni and colleagues in 2006 and by F. Pasian and colleagues in 2008.
