This manuscript explores the influence of atomic structure on glass forming ability and thermal stability in binary metallic glasses. A critical assessment gives literature data for 628 alloys from 175 binary glass systems. The atomic structure is quantified for each alloy using the efficient cluster packing model. Comparison of atomic structure with amorphous thickness and thermal stability gives the following major results. Binary glasses show a strong preference for discrete solute to solvent atomic radius ratios R*, which give efficient local atomic packing. Of 15 possible R* values, only five are common and only four represent the most stable glasses. The most stable binary glasses are also typically solute rich, with enough solute atoms to fill all the solute sites and roughly one-third of the solvent sites. An assessment of binary metallic glasses: correlations between structure, glass forming ability and stability

Amorphous Zr/sub x/Cu/sub 1-x/ alloys (0.50< or =x< or =0.74) prepared by melt-spinning are investigated by means of electrical and thermal measurements. The negative temperature coefficient of the electrical resistivity suggests that the criterion 2k/sub F/roughly-equalk/sub p/ is always fulfilled in this system (k/sub F/ = Fermi wave number, k/sub p/ = position of the first maximum of the structure factor S(k)). The high density of states N/sub ..gamma../(E/sub F/) as inferred from specific-heat measurements originates from the d electrons of Zr. The bare density of states (determined from N/sub ..gamma../(E/sub F/) with the aid of the electron-phonon coupling constant lambda) is three times higher than calculated from the free-electron model and almost independent of the Zr concentration. Phonon-electron scattering as determined by thermal-conductivity measurements shows a similar deviation from free-electron behavior. A decisive test of the Nagel-Tauc condition for high (meta-) stability of the metallic glasses is not possible due to the apparent failure of both free-electron and rigid-band models. All samples investigated are superconducting and belong to the extreme-type-II superconductors. Fluctuation-induced paraconductivity extends up to 1.5T/sub c/. An analysis of the electron-phonon coupling constant lambda as determined from T/sub c/ indicates that the electron-ion matrix element variesmore » strongly across the Zr/sub x/Cu/sub 1-x/ series. The size of lambda, the jump of the specific heat at T/sub c/, and its drop at low temperatures show that Zr-Cu alloys are weak- to intermediate-coupling superconductors. Amorphous superconducting Zr x Cu 1-x : Electronic properties, stability, and low-energy excitations

The LaLa and LaA1 partial atomic distribution functions have been determined for glassy La1−xA1x from X-ray diffraction studies of isomorphous alloys of La1−xA1x, La1−x(A1Ga), and La1 −xGax for x = 0.20, 0.24 and 0.28. The atomic short range order of these La based metallic glasses is quite different from that of typical amorphous transition metal-metalloid alloys and from dense random packing models. A relatively short and well defined LaA1 nearest neighbor distance suggests some covalency in the bonds between unlike atoms and possible chemical ordering in the alloys.

X-ray diffraction studies of the structure of LaA1Ga metallic glasses

The kinetics of structural relaxations in glassy metal Zr65Al7.5Cu27.5 films are monitored using resistivity measurements. As-prepared samples irreversibly relax towards their metastable equilibrium or steady-state in close relation to co-occurring surface smoothing, when exposed to annealing and ion treatment. Vice versa, ion beams are used as a tool to probe the response to small structural disturbances which are found to relax thermally following a stretched exponential time dependence. A strongly decreasing Kohlrausch exponent with temperature indicates increasing dynamic heterogeneities during successive freezing out of relaxational modes.

The kinetics of internal structural relaxation of metallic glasses probed with ion beams and resistivity measurements

It is shown that superconductivity is a useful tool to investigate the evolution of the amorphous state, when heat treatment below the crystallization temperature.

Heat treatment effects in La70Cu30 amorphous system

We report on measurements of the electrical resistivity and the superconducting transition temperature of amorphous La−Ag alloys (∼60–74 at % La) obtained by liquid quenching. The temperature coefficient of the resistivity is always slightly negativ, its value cannot be described well by existing theories.T

 depends linearly on the La content and seems to be not very sensitive to the second alloy constituent.
