Drilling fluids have evolved from humble beginnings into advanced technology responsible for many critical functions in well construction. Essential functions such as formation pressure management, wellbore stabilization, and cuttings transport are derived from the physical and chemical properties of the drilling fluid, and these properties result from the underlying fluid design and formulation of chemical additives. Throughout the history of well construction, the suite of accessible chemical additives and fluid formulations along with knowledge of how these chemistries interact with the formation during drilling has increased significantly. These advancements have resulted in enhanced fluid performance allowing for the successful drilling of increasingly complex wells. In this chapter, a comprehensive analysis will be performed on drilling fluid functions, properties, formulations, and applications for a range of fluid systems including conventional clay-based aqueous systems and emulsion-based nonaqueous systems, reservoir drilling fluids, and the more recently developed high-performance aqueous and nonaqueous fluids.

Horizontal well is one of the important methods of unconventional oil and gas resource development. As increasing length of horizontal section, there is a serious problem that axial force cannot transfer to bit. The drilling field needs a low-friction and low-cost drag reduction tool. This article summarized existing technologies of drag reduction in the horizontal and inclined well and proposes an integrated design of torque clutch. Detailed design of tool sub-systems is introduced. The tool includes three sub-systems: clutch, hydraulic system, and monitoring system. The clutch is consisted of multiple clutch units mounted in a parallel arrangement. Power of hydraulic control system adopts difference in pressure between inside and outside of drill pipes. It can efficiently reduce power consumption. The design function and minimum working pressure are validated and obtained by indoor test. Drilling of Challenging ERD Wells with Water-Based Mud: How to Significantly Reduce Torque and Drag by New Generation Lubricant

Drag reduction technologies mainly include the mechanical method and the chemical method. Mechanical drag reduction technologies are widespread in the drilling field due to their environmental friendliness and ease of use. Vibration technologies are among some of the most-used mechanical drag reduction technologies. However, various types of vibration tools have the negative effect of obstructing the promotion and application of mechanical drag reduction technologies. This paper widely investigated the types and applications of vibration tools. A drilling agitator system and slider drilling technology were included. The structure and mechanism of the vibration tool were studied. A multiscale friction model was proposed based on the Dahl model according to the drilling environment. The model was verified using experimental data. The multiscale friction model was used to analyze the drag reduction mechanism and the effect of different kinds of vibration technologies. Simulations demonstrated that vibration technologies can effectively reduce the axial friction of the drill string. Longitudinal vibration can reduce the axial friction such that the dependence of the reduced coefficient of friction on the reduced velocity does not change significantly after the reduced oscillation amplitude exceeds the critical value of one. Axial friction decreased with the increasing amplitude of the radial vibration. However, the reduction effect has no relationship with the rate of penetration (ROP). Torsional vibration and rocking motion can reduce the axial friction force. When the oscillation amplitude increases, the axial friction decreases. The reduction effect of slider drilling technology is better than torsional vibration and two other technologies in terms of friction reduction.

Vibration Technologies for Friction Reduction to Overcome Weight Transfer Challenge in Horizontal Wells Using a Multiscale Friction Model

As the drilling industry pursues more horizontal wells with increasingly complex design (e.g., extended-reach wells, high angle wells), challenges from high friction (e.g., reduced Rate of Penetration [ROP], stuck pipe, severe doglegs or corkscrews) grow more pronounced. These challenges are particularly pronounced in Water Based Muds (WBMs), which have an inherently higher Coefficient of Friction (CoF) than Oil Based Muds (OBMs) or Synthetic Based Muds (SBMs). While there are many lubricity additives that are available to reduce frictional force, these additives may present challenges ranging from adversely affecting the properties of the drilling fluid (e.g., liquid lubricants that may change rheology or interact with other additives) to interfering with drilling equipment (e.g., glass beads that plug valves in mud pulse telemetry systems). To address these challenges, we have developed a novel method for encapsulating lubricant for use as a lubricity additive. Characterization of encapsulated oil in the lab has shown the ability to reduce the CoF of water based mud systems by over 80%. Field characterization of encapsulated oil was corroborated with experimental results; we have observed ROP improvements of 20%, torque reduction of up to 45%, and drag reduction of up to 50% in field scale testing, as well as ROP enhancement of216% in the Alliance/Northern DJ Basin and torque reductions of up to 42% in the Heath Basin. Our field characterization demonstrates the utility of using encapsulated oil in WBMs to improve the operational efficiency of drilling.
