Agile development projects have become a reality in large enterprises using offshore development models. A case study involving seven international companies with offices in Bangalore, India, and London, UK was conducted, including interviews with 19 practitioners. The contribution of this paper is to illustrate the reasons for tailoring Agile practices within the context of large enterprises. The findings show that scrum roles and practices did not conflict with enterprise policies or processes and were thought to improve product quality and productivity. However, agile practices from the XP tradition were not so widely adopted. Test driven development did not integrate well within enterprises where independent quality assurance teams were constituted as separate departments. Continuous integration was found to be challenging where enterprise software products required time consuming regression testing and elaborate code release processes. While adoption of coding standards and collective code ownership are necessary to facilitate interaction between disparate stakeholder groups.

Influences on Agile Practice Tailoring in Enterprise Software Development

Enterprise design decisions include choosing among operational strategies, allocating scarce resources, and coordinating actions toward common goals, among others. In this paper, we explore how the concepts and applications of the efficiency performance measurement paradigm can be used to inform enterprise design. Up to date, efficiency performance measurement has been mainly used to describe how well an enterprise has performed, i.e., answering “what happened” via an ex post evaluation. However, informing enterprises on “what might happen” when making changes, i.e., an ex ante evaluation, has received less attention. To address this gap, we synthetize findings pertaining to enterprise design from the organizational design, enterprise systems engineering, and efficiency performance measurement literatures. The synthesis allows us to identify the integrative role that the efficiency performance measurement paradigm plays in informing enterprise transformation decisions. We illustrate this role by providing a case study of an enterprise dealing with design decisions. Our research provides exploratory evidence, for managerial stakeholders, about the ability of the efficiency performance measurement paradigm to answer how well an enterprise could perform if certain design decisions are made.

Efficiency-Driven Enterprise Design: A Synthesis of Studies

‘Bolting on’ security functionality in Information Technology (IT) systems late in the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) can be expensive and adversely affect system functionality and usability. Information Systems Security Engineering (ISSE) is a specialized application of systems engineering that addresses the identification of security requirements and their successful translation into IT system design. Yet experience has shown that security is often the “sacrificial lamb” when project managers seek to trade scope to meet cost and schedule requirements despite increasing security and privacy regulation in multiple industries. Given the proper application of ISSE would preclude such choices, overcoming barriers to implementation of ISSE in the SDLC would help project managers provide targeted application of scarce resources; facilitate proper security engineering; reduce overall risk to project scope, cost and schedule; and address the most critical IT security compliance issues affecting their project.

11.2.1 Factors Related to the Implementation of ISSE: A Quality Perspective

We present a curriculum that prepares students for supporting large Enterprise Information Systems (EIS). EIS is best explained through the evolution of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). These systems evolved over the last years driven by (1) changing business requirements and (2) new development capabilities provided by technologies evolution and software vendors' innovation. These developments led to a new discipline--Enterprise Information Systems, which deals with issues whose focus is on creating and sustaining business benefits through the utilization of corporate IT infrastructure assets. Currently, EIS knowledge is essentially acquired on the job after substantial time of experience building and longer career ladder scale. This paper presents an experience of a curriculum implementation that prepares students for the pervasive EIS landscape in meeting today's corporate needs. Our IT-based educational approach is evaluated as an alternative to prevailing Business-based approaches to EIS instruction. In this IT-rooted approach, the curriculum is divided into four sections: a Core IT block of courses followed by two progressive-levels of advanced EIS-related specialized subjects, and an industry-oriented field-training experience. Initially, a Core IT background provides a foundation for IT innovation in developing EIS components at sophomore-level. A junior-level of specialized instruction introduces integrated modules which form EIS platforms. Finally, supporting technologies of EIS-related processes and workflows are presented at senior-level of specialized EIS instruction. An assessment case study of the proposed Enterprise System programs is carried out through which we discuss the results of the curriculum performance.
