The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accumulator Ring, when completed in 2006, will be capable of delivering a 1.0 GeV, 1.4 MW proton beam to a liquid mercury target for neutron production. This paper presents an overview of the issues and logistics associated with the preparation and installation of the accelerator Ring System. The preparatory activities which occurred at BNL, vendors and at the SNS will be discussed as well as the installation sequence and status.

The Installation Status of the SNS Accumulator Ring

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS*) is an accelerator-based neutron source currently nearing completion at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. When completed in 2006, the SNS will provide a 1 GeV, 1.44 MW proton beam to a liquid mercury target for neutron production. SNS is a collaborative effort between six U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories and offered a unique opportunity for the mechanical engineers to work with their peers from across the country. This paper presents an overview of the overall success of the collaboration concentrating on the accelerator ring mechanical engineering along with some discussion regarding the relative merits of such a collaborative approach. Also presented are a status of the mechanical engineering installation and a review of the associated installation costs.

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), currently under construction at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is a collaborative effort between six U.S. Department of Energy partner laboratories. Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is responsible for the ring and transport lines requiring 312 magnets and 251 power supplies. The challenge is to maintain a closed communication loop among stakeholders for the variable parameters integral to these two major systems. This paper provides an overview of the organization and functional responsibilities used to define, update and communicate specific design parameters related to the SNS magnet, power supply, and other critical systems.
