The present invention relies on the idea of a meaning-based search, allowing users to locate information that is close in meaning to the concepts they are searching. A semantic space is created by a lexicon of concepts and relations between concepts. A query is mapped to a first meaning differentiator, representing the location of the query in the semantic space. Similarly, each data element in the target data set being searched is mapped to a second meaning differentiator, representing the location of the data element in the semantic space. Searching is accomplished by determining a semantic distance between the first and second meaning differentiator, wherein this distance represents their closeness in meaning. Search results on the input query are presented where the target data elements that are closest in meaning, based on their determined semantic distance, are ranked higher.

Meaning-based information organization and retrieval

Systems and methods that determine a meaning of a knowledge item using related information are described. In one aspect, a knowledge item is received, related information associated with the knowledge item is received, at least one related meaning based on the related information is determined, and a knowledge item meaning for the knowledge item based at least in part on the related meaning is determined. Several algorithms and types of related information useful in carrying out such systems and methods are described.

Determining a Meaning of a Knowledge Item Using Document Based Information

The present invention is directed to a system in which a semantic space is searched in order to determine the semantic distance between two locations. A further aspect of the present invention provides a system in which a portion of semantic space is purchased and associated with a target data set element which is returned in response to a search input. The semantic space is created by a lexicon of concepts and relations between concepts. An input is associated with a location in the semantic space. Similarly, each data element in the target data set being searched is associated with a location in the semantic space. Searching is accomplished by determining a semantic distance between the first and second location in semantic space, wherein this distance represents their closeness in meaning and where the cost for retrieval of target data elements is based on this distance.

Meaning-based advertising and document relevance determination

A data collection and retrieval system and associated method allow the capture and replication of data presented at various Web pages into a database application through text parsing of the HTML source code of that document. The system allows the user to select one or more Web pages containing data of interest; to specify exactly which data within any page is to be captured; to specify how frequently data is to be collected; and to specify the conditions for collection and retrieval. The advantage of the system is realized through efficient, automated data collection that would otherwise be impractical. The system includes an initialization stage and an automatic execution stage. The initialization stage provides the user interface which allows the user to select the source file that contains data the user wishes to copy, target database that will receive the data, and timing criteria for automatic transfer of data. The automatic execution stage automatically transfers the data from the source file to the target database as instructed by the user in the initialization stage.

System and method for data retrieval and collection in a structured format

The paper discusses the benefit of using fuzzy sets in data summaries based on generalized association rules. Fuzzy sets provide a convenient interface between labels and data and allow for partial belonging to connex but distinct classes. They thus offer a robust reading of the data. Starting with fuzzy partitions of attribute domains which are meaningful for a user, a procedure is described which enables data summaries involving fuzzy quantifiers to be built, by computing fuzzy cardinalities. The difference between this new type of fuzzy summary and previous proposals is also pointed out.

On fuzzy association rules based on fuzzy cardinalities

The growth of the Internet has produced a lot of advantages, together with the opportunity to provide different people with access to a large warehouse of information. However, this phenomenon produces some difficulties in the activities of searching and retrieving. A large amount of information is sometimes useless if it does not offer tools to respond to the information needs of the user. This paper introduces an approach devoted to facilitating information access and retrieval using the World Wide Web's syntactic structures and semantic organization. We consider the HTML language syntax structure and the organization of information in a general Web document, and we define some rules that people use for structuring Web information. These rules can be used for managing and retrieving Web information and its semantics. A Web document is treated as a complex informative object formed by images, tables, animations, videos and text organized into chapters, paragraphs, titles, and so on, connected according to semantic links. Knowledge associated with the information structure helps in retrieving relevant information.

Toward a retrieval of HTML documents using a semantic approach

The production process of documents was deeply transformed by the information technology influence on document writing activities. The wide use of personal computers produced a transformation of the document creation process. It is becoming a process of transformation and aggregation of documents. The different phases of this process are becoming more rapid due to the reusability of available documents by means of the cut and paste functionality. Internet diffusion is improving transformation of the document production process according to a co-operative approach. Indeed, the Internet is making available a large and growing amount of information, and focuses its attention on global information starting from local information. Locally and globally available information may be used to form a new document according to copyright problems. It is not, however, easy to retrieve and organise the large amount of information potentially available on the Internet according to the author's information goals. In this context there is a need for tools for editing and searching documents, that enable the automatic creation of personalised working documents. The aim of the paper is to define an approach for the on-line driven creation of documents, starting from the definition of their structures using shapes and semantics of their information.
