A study with K-9 Greek students was conducted in order to evaluate how the declarative knowledge acquisition was affected by incorporating Arduino experiments in secondary Chemistry Education A Digital Application (DA) that blends the use of the Arduino sensors’ experiments with digital educational material, including Virtual Labs (VLs), was constructed from scratch to be used through the Interactive Board (IB) as a learning tool by three different student groups (N = 154) In the first stage of the learning process, all groups used only the digital material of the DA In the second stage, the three groups used different learning tools of the DA Through the IB, the first group used Arduino experiments, the second one the VLs, and the third only static visualizations A pre- to post-test statistical analysis demonstrated that the first two groups were equivalent in regard to achievement in declarative knowledge tests and of a higher level than the third group Therefore, it can be concluded that conducting Arduino experiments in a mixed virtual-physical environment results in equivalent learning gains in declarative knowledge as those attained by using VL experimentation through the IB

Teaching Chemistry with Arduino Experiments in a Mixed Virtual-Physical Learning Environment

With the advances in open-source technology, many laboratory devices can be built with a modest budget, particularly assistive laboratory devices. The current market cost of most assistive laboratory devices is a major barrier for students with accessibility needs. Specifically, for students with visual impairment, their limited choice of laboratory assistive devices has motivated us to construct a low-cost, multipurpose sensor hub capable of connecting to a pH electrode or a thermocouple, two sensors commonly used in many chemistry teaching laboratories. In this technology report, we present the construction of a text-to-speech (TTS) multipurpose universal chemistry sensor hub (MUCSH) built using an Arduino platform and other associated open-source electronic parts. The cost of this device is between $200 and $300, a fraction of the cost of commercially available products, which cost thousands of dollars.

Combining the Maker Movement with Accessibility Needs in an Undergraduate Laboratory: A Cost-Effective Text-to-Speech Multipurpose, Universal Chemistry Sensor Hub (MUCSH) for Students with Disabilities

The research achievements of a university chemistry lab regarding dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were transformed into a high school hands-on course by simplifying the experimental steps and equipment. Our research methodology was action research. We verified the DSSC course step by step. First, 10 members of a high school science study club helped to revise the course over a school semester. A questionnaire survey revealed that all students agreed that the course increased their understanding of DSSCs and solar cells. Second, 35 students were enrolled in a 10th-grade elective energy course to study the revised DSSC topics for 3 weeks. A five-point Likert scale was used to collect students’ feedback, and students reported looking forward to making their own high-performance DSSC modules (4.60) and stated that being able to make their own solar cell was a great accomplishment (4.49). Third, the course was implemented at a junior high school science camp, and the 37 participating students were all able to complete the hands-on experiment. In the questionnaire survey, the students expressed that they enjoyed learning about scientific principles through a hands-on approach (4.59). Fourth, most of the 12 schoolteachers who voluntarily participated in the DSSC workshop agreed that integrating DSSC activity into school courses would be conducive to multidisciplinary learning. This course could facilitate participants’ self-evaluations in science knowledge, experimental skills, learning motivations, and positive attitudes toward sustainability.

TCDuino: Development of an Inexpensive Microcontroller-Based Thermal Conductivity Detector for Quantification of Gas Mixtures.

This research was conducted to build a view of the nature of science and technology (VNoST) chemistry education students' ability through the didactical design reconstruction. The material taken is Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) topic with technochemistry education model. It is a model that looked at education from the perspective of engineers and scientists who work not only on inquiry but also on a design perspective. Based on literature research, Indonesian students had low academic literacy performance as revealed in PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) study from 2000-2015. This problem can be caused by a weak teacher's abilities of the nature of science and technology (VNoST). This research's method is Research and Development (R&D) through the Model of Educational Reconstruction (MER). The instruments used were the VNoST questionnaire, interview guidelines, and content analysis guidelines. This study's subjects were 25 prospective chemistry education students in the 6 th semester for pre-conception study and ten students for implementation study at one of State Universities in Indonesia. The didactical design of learning that has been developed had several advantages, including the prediction of student responses and the anticipation of educators as well as the essential material that is a barrier to student learning. Analysis of the VNoST understanding construction patterns is explored further so that the reasons that underlie students in defining science and technology and their relationship are obtained. The implementation study proved that understanding VNoST students after attending didactical design learning improved by changing students' views on science and technology to be more accurate.

Science, engineering, and technology of dye sensitized solar cells: a didactical design based on technochemistry education

This laboratory practice is intended for undergraduate students of chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering, to illustrate the simple concepts behind dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), and how basic chemistry can be translated into a practical application through the use of microcontrollers. Unlike commercial counterparts, one of the main problems of handmade solar cells is their low efficiency that impedes their use as a power source, making the laboratory practice less appealing to students. In this work, we present a simple alternative application using an open-source microcontroller and a solar cell as a switch to turn the light on and off, depending on the actual lighting conditions in the room.
