This report consists of a survey of the state of the art in uncertainty-based design together with recommendations for a Base research activity in this area for the NASA Langley Research Center. This report identifies the needs and opportunities for computational and experimental methods that provide accurate, efficient solutions to nondeterministic multidisciplinary aerospace vehicle design problems. Barriers to the adoption of uncertainty-based design methods are identified. and the benefits of the use of such methods are explained. Particular research needs are listed.

Needs and Opportunities for Uncertainty-Based Multidisciplinary Design Methods for Aerospace Vehicles

Digital manufacturing eliminates the expense and time required to develop custom products. By utilizing this technology, designers can quickly create a customized product specifically for their performance needs. But the timescale and expense from the engineering design workflows used to develop these customized products have not been adapted from the workflows used in mass production. In many cases these customized designs build upon already successful mass-produced products that were developed using conventional engineering design workflows. Many times as part of this conventional design process significant time is spent creating and validating high fidelity models that accurately predict the performance of the final design. These existing validated high fidelity models used for the mass-produced design can be reused for analysis and design of unknown products. This thesis explores the integration of reduced order modeling and detailed analysis into the engineering design workflow developing a customized design using digital manufacturing. Specifically, detailed analysis is coupled with proper orthogonal decomposition to enable the exploration of the design space while simultaneously shaping the model representing the design. This revised workflow is examined using the design of a laboratory scale overhead mixer impeller. Using Adaptive Resonance Theory in Design of Structures

Issues related to the development of a Code Validation System (CVS) are presented for the rapid transfer of turbulence models in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to industry and research. While CFD has become a successful and critical tool in many industries in both application and R&D, it has not kept pace with the progress made by turbulence models. This is due primarily to the inefficient and crude method of transfer of newly developed turbulence models to the CFD community. Timely transfer of this critical knowledge would help ensure that industry and government research scientists keep pace with current trends and progress made by turbulence modelers. Design considerations related to the development of a turbulence modeling information data base, or CVS, are presented that will bring together turbulence models, numerical algorithms, and experimental data and transfer this information via the Internet and World Wide Web to developers and end-users of CFD codes allowing proper use of the latest models and inherent their limitations.

On the development of an intelligent code validation system for the rapid transfer of turbulence model technology

This paper describes XVis version 4.2, which is written in C++ using an object-oriented approach and implementing field data, plot type, and surface type in a way which allows for easy extensibility for future enhancements. XVis is a highly interactive visualization package specifically designed to visualize Computational Fluid Dynamic data. The package allows for multi-window, multi-segment, and profile plot capability for two- and three-dimensional flow fields on structured and unstructured multi-zoned meshes. The graphical user interface is implemented in OSF/Motif and the graphics is displayed using OpenGL. This results in a program that is fairly portable. Additionally, the program is available to DOD institutions and contractors at no cost.
