TL;DR: The synthesis of aliphatic polyformals has been known for many years and is relatively straightforwardl. as mentioned in this paper showed that the main complication occurs when the diol used contains 2, 3 or 4 carbon atoms in which case the formation of the cyclic formal is favored.

Polyetherimides via nitro-displacement polymerization: Monomer synthesis and 13C-NMR analysis of monomers and polymers
Dwain M. White,Tohru Takekoshi,Frank J. Williams,Howard M. Relles,P. E. Donahue,Howard J. Klopfer,George Raymond Loucks,J. S. Manello,R. O. Matthews,R. W. Schluenz +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the synthetic route to polyetherimides by displacement of nitro-groups from disubstituted bis-imides and bisphenols is described.
