Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors for Detection of Chemical and Biological Species

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors are optical sensors exploiting special electromagnetic waves—surface plasmon-polaritons—to probe interactions between an analyte in solution and a biomolecular recognition element immobilized on the SPR sensor surface. Major application areas include detection of biological analytes and analysis of biomolecular interactions where SPR biosensors provide benefits of label-free real-time analytical technology. This paper reviews fundamentals of SPR affinity biosensors and discusses recent advances in development and applications of SPR biosensors.

Biosensors for detection of pathogenic bacteria

The merging of silicon microfabrication techniques with surface functionalization biochemistry offers new exciting opportunities in developing microscopic biomedical analysis devices with unique characteristics. Micro-mechanical transducers for chemical and biosensing applications represent one possibility. Microcantilevers can transduce a chemical signal into a mechanical motion with high sensitivity. In this review we summarize how cantilever-based sensors can be operated, and their working principle is presented in few selected biosensing experiments which have been performed recently in our groups in the study of biotin–streptavidin and antigen–antibody interactions, and specific surface charge development of organic molecules. We also discuss the advantages of this novel technique as well as its potentials.

Abstract The Resonant Mirror biosensor is a new design of optical sensor, aimed at combining the improved sensitivity of waveguide sensors with the simplicity of fabrication and ease of use associated with surface plasmon sensors. It uses the evanescent wave associated with a dielectric resonant structure to probe reactions occurring in a sensing layer, deposited within a few hundred nanometers of the device surface and is aimed at the real time monitoring of biological assays, without use of labelled molecules. This paper describes the operation of the device and performance features relevant to its use as a biosensor.
