Unified time analysis of photon and particle tunnelling

The dynamics of charged particles in electromagnetic fields is an essential component of understanding the most extreme environments in our Universe. In electromagnetic fields of sufficient magnitude, radiation emission dominates the particle motion and effects of nonlinear quantum electrodynamics (QED) are crucial, which triggers electron-positron pair cascades and counterintuitive particle-trapping phenomena. As a result of recent progress in laser technology, high-power lasers provide a platform to create and probe such fields in the laboratory. With new large-scale laser facilities on the horizon and the prospect of investigating these hitherto unexplored regimes, we review the basic physical processes of radiation reaction and QED in strong fields, how they are treated theoretically and in simulation, the new collective dynamics they unlock, recent experimental progress and plans, as well as possible applications for high-flux particle and radiation sources. 

Charged particle motion and radiation in strong electromagnetic fields

The goal of this paper is twofold: to explore the response of classical charges to electromagnetic force at the level of unity in natural units and to establish a criterion that determines physical parameters for which the related radiation-reaction effects are detectable. In pursuit of this goal, the Landau-Lifshitz equation is solved analytically for an arbitrary (transverse) electromagnetic pulse. A comparative study of the radiation emission of an electron in a linearly polarized pulse for the Landau-Lifshitz equation and for the Lorentz force equation reveals the radiation-reaction-dominated regime, in which radiation-reaction effects overcome the influence of the external fields. The case of a relativistic electron that is slowed down by a counterpropagating electromagnetic wave is studied in detail. We further show that when the electron experiences acceleration of order unity, the dynamics of the Lorentz force equation, the Landau-Lifshitz equation and the Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac equation all result in different radiation emission that could be distinguished in experiment. Finally, our analytic and numerical results are compared with those appearing in the literature.

Effects of radiation reaction in relativistic laser acceleration

The concept of a closed quantized flux loop ("elementary loop") which avoids the implication of magnetic monopoles is investigated, leading to a theory of a charged lepton (muon or electron). In order to reconstruct a continuous magnetic dipole field of a source lepton, it is assumed that the flux loop adopts a statistical distribution of alternative forms characterized by a complex probability amplitude superposition, in a manner somewhat analogous to the superposition of path histories in Feynman's space-time approach to quantum mechanics. Flux quantization results from the equivalence of a line discontinuity of the phase factor of a $\ensuremath{\psi}$ function of a field lepton (due to its phase multivaluedness by $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2\ensuremath{\pi}$) to the presence of a line of quantized flux. On the same basis as quantized flux arises from such a singularity of that phase factor, so also an electric field arises when this singularity line is moving. In particular, the source's Coulomb field results from a spinning of the quantized flux loop (about the center of the source) with an angular velocity equal to the Zitterbewegung frequency $\frac{2m{c}^{2}}{\ensuremath{\hbar}}$, if the statistical distribution of flux loopforms properly represents the magnetic dipole field of a muon or of an electron. The reconstruction of the magnetic and electric fields of a charged lepton and the comparison of them with the quantized flux $\frac{\mathrm{hc}}{e}$ gives a numerical estimate of the electromagnetic interaction constant $\frac{{e}^{2}}{\ensuremath{\hbar}c}$, i.e., an understanding of the relationship between $e$ and $\ensuremath{\hbar}$. The energy $m{c}^{2}$ and angular momentum $\frac{\ensuremath{\hbar}}{2}$ may be interpreted as electromagnetic. The theory should work for both muon and electron and is expected to give some insight into the ratio of the masses of these two leptons. A representation of quarks in terms of linked quantized flux loops is suggested to describe a low-lying meson as a linkage of an elementary loop with an antiloop, and a low-lying baryon as three interlinked elementary loops. We are here developing a model approach to problems of structure and conservation laws in particle physics. A more abstract version of a quantized flux theory of particles should be preceded by such an heuristic model.

Relationship of flux quantization to charge quantization and the electromagnetic coupling constant

We study some aspects of the experimental behaviour of tachyons, in particular by finding out their « apparent » shape. A Superluminal particle, which in its own rest frame is spherical or ellipsoidal (and with an infinite lifetime), would « appear » to a laboratory frame as occupying the whole region of space bound by a double cone and a twosheeted hyperboloid. Such a structure (the tachyon « shape ») rigidly travels with the speed of the tachyon. However, if the Superluminal particle has a finite lifetimein its rest frame, then in the laboratory frame it gets afinite space extension. As a by-product, we are able to interpret physically the imaginary units entering—as is well known—the transverse co-ordinates in the Superluminal Lorentz transformations. The various particular or limiting cases of the tachyon shape are thoroughly considered. Finally, some brief considerations concerning possible experiments to look for tachyons are added.

On the shape of tachyons

In the first part of this paper we consider standard (Special) Relativity and show that a ‘Third Postulate’ (the Reinterpretation Principle) is necessary to avoid information transmissions into the past. Such a Third Postulate allows—at the same time—to predict the existence of antiparticles within a purely relativistic context.
