Thirty-six 1.5 year-old Inner Mongolian White Cashmere wether goats (body weight 28.14±1.33 kg) were used to determine the effects of dietary copper (Cu) concentration on ruminal fermentation, nutrient digestibility and cashmere fibre characteristics. Wethers were fed a basal diet (containing 7.46 mg Cu/kg DM) that was supplemented with either 0 (control), 10, 20 or 30 mg Cu/kg DM. To ensure full consumption, animals were fed restrictedly with 0.75 kg feed (DM) in two equal allotments per day. The results indicated that: (1) supplemental 10 mg Cu/kg DM in the basal diet significantly (p 0.05); however, NDF digestibility of groups supplemented with 10 and 20 mg Cu/kg DM were significantly higher than that of the control group (p 0.05). In conclusion, supplementation of cashmere goats with Cu at the rate of 10 to 20 mg/kg DM in the basal diet resulted in some changed rumen fermentation and was beneficial for NDF digestibility, while supplementation of 20 mg Cu/kg DM improved cashmere growth. Collectively, the optimal supplemental Cu level for cashmere goats during the fibre growing period was 20 mg/kg DM (a total dietary Cu level of 27.46 mg/kg DM).

Effects of Dietary Copper on Ruminal Fermentation, Nutrient Digestibility and Fibre Characteristics in Cashmere Goats

An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of dietary copper (Cu) on performance, carcass characteristics and lipid metabolism in lambs. Fifty DorperxMongolia wether lambs (approximately 3 month of age; 23.8±0.6 kg of body weight) were housed in individual pens and were assigned randomly to one of five treatments. Treatments consisted of 1) control (no supplemental Cu), 2) 10 mg Cu/kg DM from Cu-lysine, 3) 20 mg Cu/kg DM from Cu-lysine, 4) 10 mg Cu/kg DM from tribasic copper chloride (Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl; TBCC), 5) 20 mg Cu/kg DM from tribasic copper chloride. The Cu concentration was 6.74 mg/kg DM in the basal diet. Body weight was measured on two consecutive days at the start and the end of the 60-day experimental period. Blood samples were collected and then the lambs were slaughtered on d 60. Performance was not affected (p>0.05) by dietary Cu treatment. Cu-supplemented and control lambs had similar hot carcass weight, dressing percentage and longissimus muscle area, but Cu supplementation, regardless of source and level, reduced (p 0.05) by dietary treatment. Fatty acid profile of longissimus muscle was similar across treatments. These results indicate that Cu-lysine and TBCC are of similar availability in lambs. Cu supplementation given to DorperxMongolia wether lambs altered lipid metabolism. The reduction in backfat depth may be due to copper altering TNF-a metabolism in lambs. Supplementation of 10 or 20 mg Cu/kg DM showed similar effects on lipid metabolism in lambs.

Effects of dietary copper on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and fiber characteristics in cashmere goats during the cashmere slow-growing period

An in vitro gas production technique was used to evaluate the effects of copper and zinc supplementation on the amount and rate of gas production, dry matter degradability (IVDMD), utilization of metabolizable energy (ME), and ruminal fermentation patterns using rumen fluid from four Boer male goats as inoculum. The goats were fed twice daily at 07:00 and 19:00 h a total mixed ration containing 10.3 and 22.5 mg/kg DM of Cu and Zn, respectively. This diet was incubated in vitro for 96 h with four treatments being: control, Cu (21.7), Zn (5.6), and Cu–Zn (21.7 and 5.6) which was provided as a mineral premix. Data were analyzed as a completely randomized design. Rates of gas production (RGP) at 4 (RGP4h) and 6 h (RGP6h) and gas production (GP) at 24 (GP24h) and 48 h (GP48h) differed (p < 0.01) among treatments. An addition of Cu increased the RGP4h, RGP6h, GP24h, and GP48h (p < 0.0001). The Cu treatment had the highest IVDMD and control the lowest (p < 0.05), and the Cu treatment was the highest values of ME and SCFA. The addition of Cu to the in vitro ruminal fermentation increased gas production and efficiency of energy use.

Effect of Dietary Supplementation of Inorganic and Organic Trace Minerals on Nutrient Utilization in Crossbred Cows

Twenty eight 3-4 month old castrated Black Bengal kids (Capra hircus) were used to determine the effects of source and level of dietary copper (Cu) concentration on their performance and nutrient utilization. Cu was supplemented (0, 10, 20 and 30 mg/kg diet DM) as copper sulfate (, ) or copper proteinate (Cu-P). Kids were fed a basal diet containing maize (19.5%), soybean (17.0%), deoiled rice bran (56.5%), molasses (4.0%), di-calcium phosphate and salt (1.0% each) and mineral and vitamin mixture (0.5% each) supplements at 3.5% of body weight to meet NRC (1981) requirements for protein, energy, macro minerals and micro minerals, excluding Cu. The basal diet contained 5.7 mg Cu/kg, 122.5 mg Fe/kg, 110 mg Zn/kg, 0.26 mg Mo/kg and 0.32% S. or Cu-P was added to the basal diet at the rate of 10, 20 and 30 mg/kg. Kids were housed in a well ventilated shed with facilities for individual feeding in aluminum plated metabolic cages. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein on d 0, 30, 60 and 90 to determine hemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV), total erythrocyte count (TEC), total leukocyte count (TLC) and serum enzymes (alkaline phosphatase, alanine transferase and aspertate transferase). A metabolism trial of 6 days duration was conducted after 90 days of experimental feeding. Statistical analysis revealed that source and level of Cu supplementation improved live weight gain (p supplementation. Cu-P increased digestibility of ether extract (EE, p0.10) by both source and dose of Cu, N retention was affected (p interaction (p0.10) by the source of Cu but increasing dose of Cu increased (p) was higher (p interaction. It was concluded that supplementation of Cu from different sources and varying dose level in a concentrate based diet may improve performance, nutrient utilization and plane of nutrition in castrated Black Bengal kids. The effects on performance and nutrient utilization are more pronounced with Cu-P than supplementation. Higher dose of Cu showed better result than lower dose.
