Arsenic contamination in Bangladesh : An overview

Arsenic contamination of groundwater has been reported in many countries throughout the world, most notably in Southeast Asia. In recent years, much attention has focused on the As calamity in Bangladesh and West Bengal, India, following the highly publicized reports of vast populations being exposed to As-contaminated groundwater. Recently, Chakraborti et al. (2004) reported that As levels in groundwater from 50 districts in Bangladesh (representing ~ 2,000 villages) exceeded the Bangladesh drinking water guidelines for As of 50 μ with As concentrations in some cases > 1,500 μ(Tondel et al. 1999). The issue in Bangladesh has been described as “the largest poisoning of a population in history” (Smith et al. 2000), with an estimated 35–70 million inhabitants being at risk of drinking As-contaminated water (Khan et al. 1997). Chronic exposure to As causes significant human health effects including various cancers (skin, lungs, bladder, and kidneys), skin disorders (hyperkeratosis and pigment changes), vascular disease, and diabetes mellitus (Guha Mazumder et al. 1998; Guo et al. 1997; Lein et al. 2001; Mandal and Suzuki 2002; Rahman et al. 2001). The increased incidence of these health effects have been observed in Bangladesh and West Bengal populations exposed to As (Ahmed et al. 2006; Mukherjee et al. 2006).

In addition to drinking water, consumption of As-contaminated food is another major source of As exposure. In Bangladesh, As-contaminated water is also used for irrigating crops, particularly rice (Oryza sativa L.), which represents approximately 83% of the total irrigated area in Bangladesh (Dey et al. 1996). As a consequence of irrigating with As-contaminated water, rice may contain elevated levels of As. Arsenic concentrations ranging from 160 to 580 μ have been reported in rice from the Jessore district in Bangladesh (Alam et al. 2002), whereas Meharg and Rahman (2003) reported As concentrations > 1,830 μg/kg in rice from other regions of Bangladesh. Because rice is a staple food in Bangladesh, providing > 70% of the daily calorific intake (Ninno and Dorosh 2001), consumption of contaminated rice may represent a significant As exposure pathway. In fact, Meharg (2004) estimated that consumption of As-contaminated rice may contribute as much as 60% of the daily Bangladeshi dietary As intake based on conservative As concentrations in rice. In addition, absorption of As-contaminated water during the rice cooking process may significantly increase the amount of As in cooked rice (Ackerman et al. 2005; Bae et al. 2002), which is often overlooked when calculating As daily intake values.

A number of studies have reported the presence of As in rice, ranging in concentration from 32 to 1,830 μg As/kg (Abedin et al. 2002a, 2002b; Alam et al. 2002; D’Amato et al. 2004; Heitkemper et al. 2001; Kohlmeyer et al. 2003; Meharg 2004; Meharg and Rahman 2003; Schoof et al. 1998; Williams et al. 2005); however, few studies have determined the proportion of inorganic to organic As in rice. In terms of human health risk assessment, As speciation is important because the toxicity of organic, inorganic, trivalent, and pentavalent As species vary greatly (Petrick et al. 2000; Vahter and Concha 2001). In addition, there is a dearth of information on the bioavailability of As in rice after consumption. Bioavailability, in the context of human health risk assessment, refers to the fraction of an administered dose that reaches the central (blood) compartment from the gastrointestinal tract (Ruby et al. 1999). After consumption of As-contaminated rice, it is unclear what proportion of the rice-bound As is absorbed and whether As speciation influences absorption from the gastrointestinal tract. To reduce the uncertainties in estimating exposure and to provide a more accurate estimate of risk, assessment of As bioavailability is critical.

In this study, we investigated the concentration and speciation of As in supermarket-bought rice, in rice grown under greenhouse conditions using As-contaminated irrigation water, and in rice cooked in As-contaminated water. In addition, we assessed the bioavailability of As in rice using an in vivo swine assay—an animal model used to predict As uptake for human health risk assessment. We assessed As bioavailability in two different rice preparations to determine whether the mode of As accumulation in the grain (translocation by the plant vs. absorption during cooking) influenced As uptake in the swine model.

In Vivo Assessment of Arsenic Bioavailability in Rice and Its Significance for Human Health Risk Assessment

Arsenic contamination in groundwater in Bangladesh has become an additional concern vis-a-vis its use for irrigation purposes. Even if arsenic-safe drinking-water is assured, the question of irrigating soils with arsenic-laden groundwater will continue for years to come. Immediate attention should be given to assess the possibility of accumulating arsenic in soils through irrigation-water and its subsequent entry into the food-chain through various food crops and fodders. With this possibility in mind, arsenic content of 2,500 water, soil and vegetable samples from arsenic-affected and arsenic-unaffected areas were analyzed during 1999-2004. Other sources of foods and fodders were also analyzed. Irrigating a rice field with groundwater containing 0.55 mg/L of arsenic with a water requirement of 1,000 mm results in an estimated addition of 5.5 kg of arsenic per ha per annum. Concentration of arsenic as high as 80 mg per kg of soil was found in an area receiving arsenic-contaminated irrigation. A comparison of results from affected and unaffected areas revealed that some commonly-grown vegetables, which would usually be suitable as good sources of nourishment, accumulate substantially-elevated amounts of arsenic. For example, more than 150 mg/kg of arsenic has been found to be accumulated in arum (kochu) vegetable. Implications of arsenic ingested in vegetables and other food materials are discussed in the paper.

Arsenic contamination in food-chain: transfer of arsenic into food materials through groundwater irrigation.

Arsenic contamination in drinking water has a detrimental impact on human health which profoundly impairs the quality of life. Despite recognition of the adverse health implications of arsenic toxicity, there have been few studies to date to suggest measures that could be taken to overcome arsenic contamination. After the statement in 2000 WHO Bulletin that Bangladesh has been experiencing the largest mass poisoning of population in history, we researched existing literature to assess the magnitude of groundwater arsenic contamination in Bangladesh. The literature reviewed related research that had been initiated and/or completed since the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) under four domains: (1) extent of arsenic contamination; (2) health consequences; (3) mitigation and technologies and (4) future directions. To this means, a review matrix was established for analysis of previous literature based on these four core domains. Our findings revealed that several high-quality research articles were produced at the beginning of the MDG period, but efforts have dwindled in recent years. Furthermore, there were only a few studies conducted that focused on developing suitable solutions for managing arsenic contamination. Although the government of Bangladesh has made its population’s access to safe drinking water a priority agenda item, there are still pockets of the population that continue to suffer from arsenic toxicity due to contaminated water supplies.

A Review of Groundwater Arsenic Contamination in Bangladesh: The Millennium Development Goal Era and Beyond

Physiological and mineralogical responses of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. cv. Fast sorghum) in hydroponic culture at elevated concentrations of arsenic (As) were evaluated. Seedlings were grown in the presence of 0, 6.7, 33.5 and 67 µM As levels (0, 0.5, 2.5 and 5 mg As l−1) up to 14 days after treatments (DAT). Shoot and root dry matter yield were repressed by higher As levels. At low As level (6.7 µM) shoot dry matter yield was enhanced by 2.3% but at 33.5 and 67 µM As levels, the yield decreased by 52 and 79%, respectively. The root growth was similarly enhanced (8%) at the lower As level while the growth decrement at the higher As levels were 33 and 68%, respectively for the two treatments. Considering 10% dry weight (DW) reduction, the critical toxicity level of As was calculated to be 11.7 µg g−1 DW for shoot and 367 µg g−1 DW for root, indicating that shoot was more sensitive to As-toxicity than root. A whitish chlorotic symptom was observed in the fully developed young leaves at the 67 µM As level. The lowest chlorophyll content was also observed at this As level. Arsenic concentration increased both in shoot and in root with increase in solution As concentration. The concentrations of As and Fe were about 16, 28 and 17 times; and 2, 25 and 144 times higher in root than shoot at 6.7, 33.5 and 67 µM As levels, respectively. The concentrations of K, Fe and Cu were significantly lower while Ca, Mg and Mn concentrations were higher in the shoot at the 67 µM As level compared to the control plants. On the other hand, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu concentrations were higher in root at the 67 µM As level. In the shoot, accumulation and translocation of metal micronutrients, particularly that of Fe, decreased significantly because of the presence of As. The present observations suggested that As might induce a toxic effect on sorghum by hampering the translocation of the metal micronutrients. It is suggested that “As-induced Fe-deficiency” caused chlorotic symptoms in the hydroponically grown sorghum.
