Secure data transmission is a critical issue for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Clustering is an effective and practical way to enhance the system performance of WSNs. In this paper, we study a secure data transmission for cluster-based WSNs (CWSNs), where the clusters are formed dynamically and periodically. We propose two secure and efficient data transmission (SET) protocols for CWSNs, called SET-IBS and SET-IBOOS, by using the identity-based digital signature (IBS) scheme and the identity-based online/offline digital signature (IBOOS) scheme, respectively. In SET-IBS, security relies on the hardness of the Diffie-Hellman problem in the pairing domain. SET-IBOOS further reduces the computational overhead for protocol security, which is crucial for WSNs, while its security relies on the hardness of the discrete logarithm problem. We show the feasibility of the SET-IBS and SET-IBOOS protocols with respect to the security requirements and security analysis against various attacks. The calculations and simulations are provided to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed protocols. The results show that the proposed protocols have better performance than the existing secure protocols for CWSNs, in terms of security overhead and energy consumption.

Secure and Efficient Data Transmission for Cluster-Based Wireless Sensor Networks

Developing effective security solutions for wireless sensor networks (WSN) are not easy due to limited resources of WSNs and the hazardous nature of wireless medium. The implementation of encryption/decryption algorithms which are the most essential part of the secure communication can be very intricate in WSNs since they incorporate routines that having very complex and intense computing procedures. A secure clustering protocol that achieves the desired security goals while keeping an acceptable level of energy consumption is a challenging problem in wireless sensor network. LEACH (Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy) protocol is a basic clustering-based routing protocol for WSNs. S-LEACH is the first modified version of LEACH with cryptographic protection against outsider attacks. This paper proposes MS-LEACH to enhance the security of S-LEACH by providing data confidentiality and node to cluster head (CH) authentication using pairwise keys shared between CHs and their cluster members. The security analysis of proposed MS-LEACH shows that it has efficient security properties and achieves all WSN security goals compared to the existing secured solutions of LEACH protocol. A simulation based performance evaluation of MS-LEACH demonstrates the effectiveness of proposed MS-LEACH protocol and shows that the protocol achieves the desired security goals and outperforms other protocols in terms of energy consumption, network lifetime, network throughput and normalized routing load.

Enhancing S-LEACH security for wireless sensor networks

Secure and efficient data transmission is a critical issue for cluster-based wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In Cluster-based WSNs authentication of users is a very Important issue .So, by authenticating the sent user and the destination user , we can achieve the security and efficiency of data over CWSNs. To provide security of data and authentication of user we proposed a technique where we are implementing two concepts for performing those operations. The first one is identity based signature (IBS) for verification of user generated by the verifier and second one is a key is xor operated with the data and get the cipher and then binary level technique for encryption and decryption of the original message. The binary level technique converts the plain text into binary form and then splits the data into blocks and assign values to it based on identification mark (IM) technique which depends upon the length of the binary digits, then these are divided into two level, 1 st level is 2 bit and 2 nd level is 4 bit . Then at the receiver user the Cipher text will be decrypted by using the reverse technique and the destination user will get the original message. By providing those techniques we can improve efficiency, security overhead and energy consumption.

Energy efficiency in specific clustering protocols is highly desired in wireless sensor networks. Most existing clustering protocols periodically form clusters and statically assign cluster heads (CHs) and thus are not energy efficient. Every non-CH node of these protocols sends data to the CH in every time slot of a frame allocated to them using the time division multiple access scheme, which is an energy-consuming process. Moreover, these protocols do not provide any fault tolerance mechanism. Considering these limitations, we have proposed an efficient fault-tolerant and energy-efficient clustering protocol for a wireless sensor network. The performance of the proposed protocol was tested by means of a simulation and compared against the low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy and dynamic static clustering protocols. Simulation results showed that the fault-tolerant and energy-efficient clustering protocol has better performance than both the low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy and dynamic static clustering protocols in terms of energy efficiency and reliability. A fault-tolerant energy-efficient clustering protocol of a wireless sensor network

In this paper, we study the secure routing for cluster-based sensor networks where clusters are formed dynamically and periodically. We point out the deficiency in the secure routing protocols with symmetric key pairing. Along with the investigation of ID-based cryptography for security in WSNs, we propose a new secure routing protocol with ID-based signature scheme for cluster-based WSNs, in which the security relies on the hardness of the Diffie-Hellman problem in the random oracle model. Because of the communication overhead for security, we provide analysis and simulation results in details to illustrate how various parameters act between security and energy efficiency.

A Secure Routing Protocol for Cluster-Based Wireless Sensor Networks Using ID-Based Digital Signature

Clustering protocols are often used in sensor networks. In many deployment scenarios, security is a key concern. In this paper we provide a secure solution to a commonly used clustering protocol, the LEACH protocol. We show that our protocol, the GS-LEACH protocol is more energy efficient than any of the secure flavors of LEACH. The GS-LEACH (grid-based secure LEACH) protocol uses pre deployment key distribution using prior knowledge of the deployment area. We also provide a detailed security analysis of our protocol and show that it is more secure than the secure versions of LEACH. Finally with the results of our simulation experiments we show that our protocol is very energy efficient and provides a longer network lifetime compared to the other flavors of LEACH.
