A modular coil system for a quasi-axisymmetric stellarator, CHS-qa, is designed. In the design process of modular coils, the normal component of produced magnetic field is evaluated on the outermost magnetic surface that is given from the configuration design. However, such an evaluation of the normal component on the surface is not sufficient to obtain the designed quasi-axisymmetric configuration in a good precision. It is because the mirror ripple component produced by modular coils does not largely affect the normal component of magnetic field on the surface. To improve the modular coil design, the evaluation of mirror ripple component at magnetic axis is included.

The value of bootstrap current in stellarator conflgurations depends strongly on the type of conflguration. For stellarators with mod-B contours closed in the poloidal direction, one expects that bootstrap current value can be made nearly vanishing as, e.g. in W7-X. In the present paper, the efiect of the behaviour of the contours of B on the magnetic surfaces on the value of the structural factor describing the bootstrap current in the long mean free path (lmfp) is analyzed numerically by using analytical expressions. The efiect of such parameters as the number of periods and the value of on the structural factor is studied. It is found that in the type of stellarators considered, it is possible to make the lmfp bootstrap current negligible without violation of good neoclassical conflnement properties.

Elimination of the bootstrap current factor in stellarators with poloidally closed contours of the magnetic field strength

The CHS-qa 2b32 [1] configuration has been considered as a starting point for the further numerical optimisation towards small Pfirsch-Schluter current. The configurations obtained have about 4 times smaller PS current and are stable with respect to Mercier modes for β values around 0.085. However, the α-particle confinement and the MagnetoHydro-Dynamic (MHD) stability with respect to the ballooning modes appear to be more difficult issues to improve in the configurations obtained. In particular, the maximum value of β, stable with respect to the ballooning modes, has been obtained on the level of 0.02. Detailed calculations of the configurations computed with the 3D fixed boundary ideal equilibrium code VMEC2000 [2], with the 3D ideal MHD stability code TERPSICHORE [3], which reconstruct the equilibrium state in Boozer magnetic coordinates and with the MCT [4] code, which follows collisionless monoenergetic α-particles drift orbits, are presented.

The Effect of Reduced Pfirsch-Schlüter Current on the Ideal MHD Stability and Alpha Particle Confinement in 2-period Compact Configurations

Results of an optimization toward quasi‐isodynamicity for a stellarator with a comparatively large number of periods, N = 12, are presented. The following set of physics properties to be achieved was used: 1) good long‐time collisionless confinement of α‐particles; 2) small neoclassical transport in the 1/ν regime; 3) small bootstrap current; 4) high stability‐β limit. As a result, the boundary magnetic surface of a configuration is found that satisfies the above requirements for 〈β〉 ≈ 20%.
