The present teachings relate to an electrochemical system including an electrochemical device and multiple independent circuits which permit independent control of the reaction rates at different sections of the electrochemical device. The electrochemical device can be a fuel cell or an electrolyzer, and can include a common electrode in electrical communication with two or more independent circuits. The present teachings also relate to operating methods of the electrochemical system described.

Electrochemical system having multiple independent circuits

A holding device with a receiving part 2 arranged on the foot part 1 for rod-shaped components, said holding device comprising several holding elements 5 , which can be pivoted towards the axis of symmetry 4 of the receiving part and which can be moved by means of a tensioning device 7 and a connecting element 8 out of the releasing position over a contacting position and an aligning position into the holding position. Each holding element has a contacting region 6 , which is placed in contact with the component when the holding elements are tensioned. The contacting regions have faces, which are arched convexly towards the axis of symmetry and which have a slide-resistant surface. The slide-resistant surfaces of the mounting holding elements 5 are made in such a roughened up, toothed, ribbed, scaled, or similar manner that the rod-shaped component can be fixed in the holding position sufficiently and can glide on them during alignment. They can also be designed, for example, with a herringbone structure or a scaly structure in such a way that in the case of the movement of a component in a misalignment, the sliding resistance is intensified, counteracting the misalignment and in the case of the movement of the component in the desired alignment, the sliding resistance is reduced, thus promoting the desired alignment.

Holding device for rod-shaped components

A system and method for limiting voltage cycling of a fuel cell stack during a stand-by mode by providing power from a battery to the stack while the stack is turned off. The method includes monitoring the voltage of each of the fuel cells in the fuel cell stack and determining an average cell voltage of the fuel cells in the fuel cell stack. The method also determines whether the average cell voltage of the fuel cells in the fuel cell stack has fallen below a predetermined voltage value and, if so, applies a voltage potential to the fuel cell stack to increase the average cell voltage above the predetermined voltage value.

Powering a fuel cell stack during standby

The fuel cell has an anode, a cathode. The ion membrane as electrolyte is arranged between anode and cathode. The additional electrode (E) is arranged between the anode and the cathode and electrically connected to the cathode by resistor (R). The resistance value is set between 0.1 and 1 Ohm. The additional electrode is made of Nafion (RTM: sulfonated tetrafluoroethylene) and Platin or Ruthenium carbon supported catalyst. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) method for operating fuel cell; and (2) method for manufacturing fuel cell.

Direct methanol fuel cell and method for operating the same

The present invention relates to a hydrogen supply device which supplies hydrogen by selectively permitting permeation of hydrogen contained in a hydrogen containing gas (G1). This device includes: a first metal layer (2) which dissociates hydrogen molecules into hydrogen ions by a catalytic reaction and has hydrogen permeability; a second metal layer (3) which creates hydrogen molecules by bonding hydrogen ions to each other using electrons and has hydrogen permeability; a hydrogen permeation layer (1) which is interposed between the first metal layer (2) and the second metal layer (3) and permits permeation of the hydrogen ions from the first metal layer (2) to the second metal layer (3) by the application of a voltage; and a voltage application (7) for applying the voltage to the hydrogen permeation layer (1) by setting the first metal layer (2) as an anode and setting the second metal layer (3) as a cathode. According to this device, even when the concentration of hydrogen is low, it is possible to dissociate hydrogen from a hydrogen containing gas, and to suppress noise during the operation of the device.

Hydrogen supply device

A polymer solid electrolyte type fuel cell includes an internal electrode in an ion exchange membrane made of a proton conductor, a voltage application device provided between the internal electrode and one of a fuel electrode and an oxidizer electrode. Applying voltage to the internal electrode makes it possible to control fuel and/or oxidizer movements in the electrolyte.

A polymer solid electrolyte type fuel cell is provided capable
of preventing chemical deterioration of fuel cell constituent
materials such as an ion exchange membrane and the like. An internal electrode 2 is provided in an electrolyte 4 made
of a proton conductor, a voltage application means 5 is provided
between the internal electrode 2 and one of a fuel electrode 3
and an oxidizer electrode 1. Applying voltage to the internal
electrode 2 makes it possible to control fuel and/or oxidizer
movements in the electrolyte 4, thereby suppressing or restricting
the possible deterioration of the electrolyte 4.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane electrode assembly for a fuel cell advantageous for improving a bonding property of a cathode side electrolyte membrane and an inner electrocatalyst layer, and to provide a method of manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The membrane electrode assembly 1 for the fuel cell has an electrolyte 2 having proton conductivity, a cathode catalyst layer 3 bonded with one surface of the electrolyte membrane 2 in the thickness direction, an anode catalyst layer 4 bonded with the other surface of the electrolyte membrane 2 in the thickness direction, a cathode diffusion layer 5 laminated outside the cathode catalyst layer 3, and an anode diffusion layer 6 laminated outside the anode catalyst layer 4. The electrolyte membrane 2 includes the inner electrocatalyst layer 20 having conductivity, a cathode side electrolyte membrane 21 which is installed between the inner electrocatalyst layer 20 and the cathode catalyst layer 3, and electrically connects the inner electrocatalyst layer 20 and the cathode catalyst layer 3, and a bonding intermediate layer 26 which is arranged between the inner electrocatalyst layer 20 and the cathode side electrolyte membrane 21 has conductivity, proton conductivity, and improved bonding property of the inner electrocatalyst layer 20 with the cathode side electrolyte membrane 21.
