This report reviews bite plate therapy and describes several variations of bite plates Bite plates may be useful as an adjunct to periodontic and orthodontic therapy They may be used as a diagnostic appliance, to take mobile teeth out of trauma by disarticulating them, to allow teeth to extrude and shallow out associated osseous deformities, and to eliminate the superimposed occlusal trauma that may be caused by the parafunctional habits that can develop during orthodontic tooth movement The change in vertical position of the dentition and the decrease in overbite are primarily due to eruption of the posterior teeth and not intrusion of the lower anterior teeth The decrease in overbite may be accompanied by an increase in overjet and an alteration of the mesio-distal and bucco-lingual occlusal landmarks In some cases the use of a bite plate may cause the development of an anterior open bite Any such occlussal alterations produced by the bite plate should be corrected by occlusal adjustment or orthodontic therapy and occlusal adjustment

Objective: This study was designed to investigate the survival rate of vitrified mouse blastocysts depending on the presence or absence of su crose in vitrification solution. Methods: Mouse two-cell embryos were collected and cultured to blastocysts. Two vitrification solutions were prepared. The control solution was composed of 25% glycerol, 25% ethylene glycol, and 0.5 M sucrose (G25E250.5S) containing 2.5 mL glycerol, 2.5 mL ethylene glycol, 2 mL SSS, and 0.855 g sucrose in 5 mL PB1. The experimental solution was composed of 25% glycerol and 25% ethylene glycol (G25E25) and contained 2.5 mL glycerol and 2.5 mL ethylene glycol in 5 mL PB1. Artificial shrinkage was conducted by aspirating the blastocoelic fluid using an ICSI pipette. To examine the effect of sucrose in the vitrification solution on the survival rate of mouse blastocysts, the shrunken-equilibrated blastocysts were rehydrated or vitrified after being exposed to one of the two vitrification solutions. After exposure and the vitrification-thaw ing process, the re-expansion rate and hatching rate were evaluated after 6 hours of in vitro culture. Results: The re-expansion rate of mouse blastocysts exposed to vitrification solution with and without sucrose were not different in the experi mental solution (without sucrose) (98%) and the control solution (with sucrose) (92%) (p > 0.05). The hatching rate was higher in the experimental solution (95%) than in the control solution (88%), but did not differ across two treatments ( p > 0.05). The re-expansion rate of mouse blastocysts vitrified in the control solution was 92% and 94%, respectively ( p > 0.05), and the hatching rate was higher in the experimental solution (90%) than in the control solution (74%) (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Sucrose need not be added in vitrification solution for freezing of artificially shrunken mouse blastocysts.

This study was based on a cephalometric study of 82 children composed of three groups: the first group treated with a flat anterior bite plate, the second group subject to the Begg therapy, and an untreated control group. The object of this study was to investigate changes in the dentofacial complex which occur as a result of bite plate therapy compared with Begg treatment. It was found that the short term changes as a result of bite plate therapy were associated with an increase in the height of the upper and lower molars. The long term changes as a result of bite plate therapy were associated with a significant increase in the height of the molars and some increase in lower incisor height. Lower facial height showed a significant increase in dimension. During Begg treatment it was found that short term changes in the dentofacial complex were associated with a significant increase in the height of the lower molars and a significant reduction in the height of the lower incisors. The long term changes of Begg therapy were associated with a significant increase in the height of the lower molars and some increase in lower facial height.
