This paper aims to examine the influence of innovation on competitive advantage in foods manufacturing SMEs in Malaysia and the moderating effects of firm age on innovation-competitive advantage relationship. Given the correlational nature of research, the researchers adopted a random sampling technique in Malaysian foods manufacturing SMEs. Mailed structured questionnaires were employed for the collected 220 foods manufacturing SMEs. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to answer the objectives and hypotheses of the study. Finding of the study revealed that innovation has a strong positive impact on the competitive advantage, in which innovation contributes 73.5 percent variance in competitive advantage. The results indicate that SMEs should invest in innovation to gain competitive advantage. The study also found the moderating effect of firm age on the influence of innovation on competitive advantage. The study suggests a framework for analyzing the impact of innovation on competitive advantage to be applied in other settings of Malaysian SMEs. The findings of this study may be used as a guideline for entrepreneurs to establish network with research organization and universities for innovative activities or program which ultimately may gain competitive advantage in the marketplace. This study contributed to the literature by empirically investigating the effect of innovation on competitive advantage, specifically in foods manufacturing SMEs in Malaysia. Findings and implications of the study are also discussed in this paper.

Innovation and Competitive Advantage: Moderating Effects of Firm Age in Foods Manufacturing SMEs in Malaysia

Through strategy, a company seeks to sustain its competitive advantage. Yet only recently has the study of strategy begun to examine how long a specific advantage can be sustained. Based on a study of sustainability patterns in a number of industries, this article shows how the competitive pressures associated with product imitation can be predicted by identifying the core capabilities, or isolating mechanisms, that lie at the heart of a company's advantage. A number of these dynamic core capabilities are classified according to how fast they are duplicated. The imitation of capabilities shapes many strategic decisions in companies, indeed the distinctive character of companies, and that by thinking in these terms managers enhance their company's cohesiveness and responsiveness as they pursue their strategic mission in global markets.

PurposeThis study aims to determine the simultaneous effect of exporting firms' competitive strategies and capabilities on the achievement of competitive advantages and export performance under the boundary conditions of competitive intensity. In so doing, the study combines the alternative theoretical lenses of the resource-based view (RBV) and the structure–conduct–performance (SCP) paradigm.Design/methodology/approachPrimary data were obtained from 281 Turkish manufacturer–exporter firms operating in different sectors and located in several regions of the country. Structural equation modeling was utilized to test our conceptual framework, which combined the effects of RBV-based and SCP-based factors on competitive advantages and export performance under the moderating influence of competitive intensity.FindingsThis study reveals that unique firm capabilities, specifically informational, relational, and marketing capabilities, and competitive strategies, including differentiation and cost leadership, provide export firms with a competitive advantage and improve their export performance in foreign markets. Furthermore, competitive advantages partially mediate the effects of competitive strategies and unique firm capabilities on export performance. Finally, unexpectedly, and contrary to most of the existing literature, we find that competitive intensity negatively moderates the link between service advantages and export performance.Originality/valueThis research offers a comprehensive view of manufacturer–exporter firms' export performance by accounting for the overlooked simultaneous effect of firm capabilities and competitive strategies through the mediation of competitive advantages and under the boundary conditions of competitive intensity.
