Musculoskeletal Pain and Associated Factors among Building Construction Workers in Southeastern Ethiopia

Intervention for stress management among skilled construction workers.

Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) have been seen as major health problems that have direct impacts on workers’ physical/psychosocial well beings, health, and productivity. Thus, the assessment of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) in sawmills will lead to a suitable platform for development and execution of proper ergonomic intervention programmes to achieve desirable workplaces. This research focused on determining the prevailing factors associated with MSDs and establishment of exposure’s level of sawmill workers to MSDs, based on risk and postural analyses using Quick Exposure Check (QEC), Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment Method (RULA); and physical strain assessment using relative Cardiovascular Load (% CVL), Cardiovascular Strain (% CVS) and Relative Heart Rate (%RHR) equations. Six hundred and sixty – three (663) male and thirty – three (33) female workers participated in the research survey and the participants were classified into two groups: machine operators’ classification (which included: Band-saw Operators (BOs), Circular-saw Operators (COs) and Planer Operators (POs)) and sawmill workers’ classification (which included: Machine Operators (MOs), Mill Workers (MWs), Dust Parkers (DPs); and Machine Maintenance Personnel (MMPs)). Ninety – six (96) workers each from each machine operators’ classification group (making 288 MOs), 240 MWs, 96 DPs, and 72 MMPs were considered for this study. Two cities were considered in each six Southwestern States of Nigeria, namely: Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo States and a minimum of two sawmills were used in each city. The results of the postural analysis using QEC, REBA, and RULA show that an appreciable number of workers were working above the secured limit. Physical strain assessment results showed that not less than 60% of the workers were operating under high or very high-level discomfort and 61.8% of the workers were subjected to either heavy or very heavy work intensity.

Risk, Postural and Physical Strain Assessment of Sawmill Workers in Nigeria

The literature on the problems caused by frequent lifting and lowering tasks has grown rapidly in the past few decades. This paper focuses on presenting literature on the NIOSH Lifting Equation, which is used for calculating injure-free lifting capabilities for workers who perform two-handed manual lifting tasks and using the study as a basis for applying it to a manufacturing company Technocrats India, Nagpur. The papers acquired for the study focus on the importance of the equation to reduce the effect of Low Back Pain (LBP) associated with various lifting operations. The result of the study is a systematic research and compilation of various aspects of the equation and its applications at construction sites and industrial organizations and its use at a manufacturing company where the manufacturing process comprises the machining of the Cylinder Body part and Valve body part. The equation will be used for these to know the effect of the work on workers. The final assessment of the study is that for successful outcomes for reduction in Work related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) and LBP, the equation should be thoroughly considered for manual lifting practices.

The NIOSH Lifting Equation for Manual Lifting and Its Applications

This study evaluated work-related injuries among workers manually shovelling sand in Nigeria sand mines locations. The goal was to identify the type, prevalence, and risk factors of injuries. A non-probabilistic sampling technique was used to select 215 workers. Scooping rate, scooping length, shovel weight, throw height, throwing distance, break time among others, were measured and compared with the literature standards. .A modified version of Nordic Questionnaire was used to measure job-related discomforts. The Intensity of shovelling-related injuries was assessed using Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS). SPSS was used for statistical analysis of data. More than 72% of all task variables deviated from the recommended. The measured shovel handles average height (0.98 ± 0.18 m) was shorter than the users’ average chest height (1.21 ± 0.14 m). The sand shovelling task was characterised with lengthy scoping period without break, high speed throwing motion, awkward lifting and use of inappropriate shovels. Shoulder and Low Back Pains (LBP) are the commonest injuries forming 43% of the total reported pains. Pain prevalence decreased with increased age. The study noted the absence of information on, the significance of the right use of shovel and, proper shovelling techniques. The authors, however, recommended the need for the relevant ergonomics training, redesign shovels for sand shovelling and the introduction of new technologies that will reduce manual handling of shovelling task in the developing world.

Sand shovelling and related injuries among sand mine workers in Nigeria

This study evaluated manual lifting tasks methods among construction workers in Southwestern Nigeria. The aim was to determine the level of inclusion of ergonomics in the work methods. Single-task lifting analysis based on National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was used to evaluate 32 jobs involving 250 healthy workers. The result shows single task lifting index (STLI) greater than 1.0 for more than 75% of the jobs. The result indicated that more than 70% of the total workers are at an increased risk of lifting-related discomfort. Level of ergonomics inclusion in the work methods is low. More than sixty three percent (63%) of the workers had no regular ergonomics training that could expose them to better method(s) of lifting. Redesigning of work methods is necessary. Managers in the industry need proactive measures to incorporate ergonomics into their job methods to achieve STLI values of 1.0 or less.

Manual Lifting Task Methods and Low Back Pain among Construction Workers in the Southwestern Nigeria

This study evaluated working postures adopted by construction workers in Southwestern Nigeria. The objective was to compare risk factors among the group of workers. About 844 working postures were analyzed using Ovako Working Postures Analyzing System (OWAS). Semi-structured interviews were also conducted on different body regions regarding work related pains for 250 healthy Bricklayers (BL) and Bricklayers’ Assistants (BA). More than forty nine percent (49%) of the postures observed were classified as Action Family 3 (AF3) (distinctly harmful) and AF4 (Action Family 4) (extremely harmful). The percentage of harmful postures for BL was higher with fifty one (51%) of the total recorded postures. Less than 10% of the total workers reported to have adopted ergonomics training and found it secured. Meanwhile more than sixty percent (60%) of them complained of pains in their various body regions. The study revealed that majority of the workers had no exposure to ergonomics training hence adopted harmful postures at work. BL are at a higher risk. Advancement in practical ergonomics trainings on safe postures in manual lifting tasks is a necessity.
