Dynamic modeling of gearbox faults: A review

Due to excessive service load, inappropriate operating conditions or simply end of life fatigue, damage can occur in gears. When a fault, either distributed or localised, is incurred by gears, the stiffness and consequently vibration characteristics of the damaged tooth will change. In this work an analytical formulation of the time varying gearmesh stiffness was derived. An original analytical modelling of tooth cracks is presented and the gearmesh stiffness reduction due to this fault is quantified. A comparison with finite element model is presented in order to validate the analytical formulation.

Tooth faults affecting gear transmission are always accompanied by a stiffness reduction. In this article an analytical method is proposed to quantify the reduction of gearmesh stiffness due to two common tooth faults: spalling and breakage. Bending, fillet-foundation and contact deflection are taken into account. The dynamic response of a single stage spur gear transmission is computed by using analytical gearmesh issued from analytical modelling and the vibration signatures of each tooth fault is identified.

Effect of spalling or tooth breakage on gearmesh stiffness and dynamic response of a one-stage spur gear transmission

The magnitude and variation of tooth pair compliance affects tooth loading and gear dynamics significantly. This paper presents an improved fillet/foundation compliance analysis based on the theory of Muskhelishvili applied to circular elastic rings. Assuming linear and constant stress variations at root circle, the above theory makes it possible to derive an analytical formula for gear body-induced tooth deflections which can be directly integrated into gear computer codes. The corresponding results are in very good agreement with those from finite element models and the formula is proved to be superior to Weber's widely used equation, especially for large gears.

Sous l'effet des charges transmises, les elements d'une transmission par engrenages se deforment et les contacts entre dentures peuvent s'effectuer hors du plan d'action theorique entre profils non conjugues si les corrections de forme sur les dents ne sont pas appropriees. L'objectif principal de cet article est de presenter un modele original permettant une premiere approche du comportement dynamique d'engrenages cylindriques droits soumis a ces conditions de fonctionnement particulieres. Le pignon et la roue sont assimiles a des cylindres indeformables lies par des rigidites dont les valeurs et les orientations dans l'espace dependent du temps afin de simuler les evolutions des conditions d'engrenement. En premiere approximation, seuls les degres de liberte de torsion sont pris en consideration. Les resultats montrent que les contacts entre profils non conjugues induisent des phenomenes dynamiques particuliers qui se traduisent au niveau du chargement sur les dentures par, i) une duree de contact plus importante donc un rapport de conduite plus eleve que dans les conditions nominales, ii) des impacts dont les amplitudes dependent du niveau de charge transmise et des vitesses de rotation.
