Sulfides are well investigated as thermoelectric materials but their performance is typically limited by low electrical conductivity. High electrical performance in Cu3SbS4 is reported by creating high valence vacancies, which efficiently provides multiple carriers. It is revealed from the perspective of a chemical bond by calculations that Al can serve as vacancy stabilizer as its entry into the lattice forms intensified bonds with neighboring atoms and lowers the vacancy formation energy. As a result, the average power factor of Cu3SbS4 with 9 wt% CuAlS2 reaches 16.1 µW cm−1 K−2. Finally, by further addition of AgAlS2, a peak zT of 1.3 and an average zT of 0.77 are obtained due to the reduced thermal conductivity. The attained average power factor and average zT are superior to other low‐toxic thermoelectric sulfides. The findings shed light on the new strategy for creating favorable vacancies to realize high‐efficiency doping in thermoelectric materials.

High Thermoelectric Performance in Earth‐Abundant Cu3SbS4 by Promoting Doping Efficiency via Rational Vacancy Design

An estimation-based approach for range image segmentation: on the reliability of primitive extraction

Because of the large Seebeck coefficient, low thermal conductivity, and earth-abundant nature of components, tetrahedrites are promising thermoelectric materials. DFT calculations reveal that the additional copper atoms in Cu-rich Cu14Sb4S13 tetrahedrite can effectively engineer the chemical potential towards high thermoelectric performance. Here, the Cu-rich tetrahedrite phase was prepared using a novel approach, which is based on the solvothermal method and piperazine serving both as solvent and reagent. As only pure elements were used for the synthesis, the offered method allows us to avoid the typically observed inorganic salt contaminations in products. Prepared in such a way, Cu14Sb4S13 tetrahedrite materials possess a very high Seebeck coefficient (above 400 μVK−1) and low thermal conductivity (below 0.3 Wm−1K−1), yielding to an excellent dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit ZT ≈ 0.65 at 723 K. The further enhancement of the thermoelectric performance is expected after attuning the carrier concentration to the optimal value for achieving the highest possible power factor in this system.

Phase Analysis and Thermoelectric Properties of Cu-Rich Tetrahedrite Prepared by Solvothermal Synthesis

Local off-centering of atoms generally leads to high Grüneisen parameters and thus low lattice thermal conductivity, which is considered to be favorable for thermoelectric materials. Nevertheless, such severely distorted local structures may cause strong scattering for electrons and poor electrical performance. Here we demonstrate the relationship between thermoelectric properties and local structure in AgBiSe2 dual alloying with PbTe. It is disclosed that the introduction of Te anions in cubic (AgBiSe2)1−x(PbTe)x can release the distortion index of Bi/Ag/Pb cations in a octahedral shell, which substantially improves the local symmetry and meanwhile the weighted mobility in relevant alloys. More interestingly, it is elucidated that dually-alloyed AgBiSe2 displays a metavalent bonding character, first time reported in n-type cubic TE materials, as collectively verified by atomic coordination number, anomalously increased optical dielectric constant, moderate electrical conductivity, and large Grüneisen parameter. Consequently, a record-high average power factor of 0.52 mW m−1 K−2 between the measurement temperature interval, and a peak zT value of 0.92 at 800 K is obtained for metavalently bonded (AgBiSe2)0.75(PbTe)0.25.
