Global maps of non-traumatic spinal cord injury epidemiology: towards a living data repository

We studied the incidence of craniopharyngioma in Denmark during the period 1985–2004 and estimated worldwide incidence rates (IR) of craniopharyngioma based on a literature review. Craniopharyngioma patients diagnosed during the period 1985–2004 were identified from the Danish National Patient Registry, the Danish Cancer Registry and regional registries. Medical records were reviewed. Danish population data were obtained from Statistics Denmark. European and World population data were obtained from EU and WHO homepages. Prior studies providing data on craniopharyngioma IRs were identified via PubMed and, if appropriate, were included in a weighted analysis estimating overall and children’s IRs of craniopharyngioma. IRs are given as new cases per million per year. We identified 189 patients with new verified (162) or probable craniopharyngioma. The overall WHO World-standardised incidence rate was 1.86 (1.60–2.14) for all ages and 2.14 (1.53–2.92) for children (age <15 years). Peak incidence rates were observed in age groups 5–9 and 40–44 years. Fifteen prior studies (including 1,232 craniopharyngioma cases) were identified. Seven and 11 studies, respectively, were eligible for weighted all-ages and childhood population IR analyses, yielding summary IRs of 1.34 (1.24–1.46) (all ages) and 1.44 (1.33–1.56) (children). We have provided a detailed survey of the incidence of craniopharyngioma in Denmark during a recent 20-year period. Overall IR of craniopharyngioma in Denmark was 1.86 (1.60–2.14) as compared to 2.14 (1.53–2.92) among children. Weighted estimates of craniopharyngioma world IRs were 1.34 (1.24–1.46) in all ages and 1.44 (1.33–1.56) among children.

Childhood cancer is fast becoming an important pediatric problem in several parts of Africa, with the progressive decline of infectious and nutritional diseases. The present study analyzes 1325 Nigerian children with neoplasms diagnosed over a 13-year period (1960-1972). It accounted for 12.5% of all tumors registered in our Cancer Registery over the period of study. The commonest type of malignant tumor in the Nigerian child was solid lymphoma, of which Burkitt's tumor predominated. The overall pattern of tumors in these children was strikingly different in certain aspects from what obtains in the Caucasian child. When four main groups of tumors were considered, the ratio frequency pattern in Nigerian children was one of high lymphoma, high orbital, low leukemia, low glioma type. In the Caucasian child, the ratio frequency pattern is usually one of high leukemia, high glioma, low lymphoma, low orbital type. The observed differences in frequencies of childhood tumors between population groups require further studies.

Background and Purpose: Gait deviations in individuals after incomplete spinal cord injury (ISCI) that are quantified using spatiotemporal (ST) parameters are often targeted during therapeutic interventions. The purpose of our study was to establish reliability and responsiveness of ST parameters of gait after ISCI using an instrumented walkway (GaitMat II). Methods: Sixteen individuals with ISCI participated in the study. Each subject completed at least 2 walking trials at self-selected (SS) walking speed. Intraclass correlation coefficients model 2, 1 (ICC2,1) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), standard error of measurement (SEM), SEM percent change (SEM%), the minimal detectable change (MDC), and the MDC percent change (MDC%) were determined for 8 ST parameters including step length, single limb support, and double limb support time for the more and less impaired limb, cadence, and speed.
