Smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is a meshfree particle method based on Lagrangian formulation, and has been widely applied to different areas in engineering and science. This paper presents an overview on the SPH method and its recent developments, including (1) the need for meshfree particle methods, and advantages of SPH, (2) approximation schemes of the conventional SPH method and numerical techniques for deriving SPH formulations for partial differential equations such as the Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations, (3) the role of the smoothing kernel functions and a general approach to construct smoothing kernel functions, (4) kernel and particle consistency for the SPH method, and approaches for restoring particle consistency, (5) several important numerical aspects, and (6) some recent applications of SPH. The paper ends with some concluding remarks.

This book offers a comprehensive manuscript encompassing two separable texts on hydrodynamics and control of marine vehicles. In contrast to the aerospace industry, where dynamicists are often control experts as well, in the maritime world (due to the significant effect environmental loads have on the dynamics of the system) the more common pairing is dynamics with hydrodynamics. As such, Fossen is one of few in the maritime industry who could write such a complete treatment of dynamics, hydrodynamics, and control issues related to surface and subsurface marine vehicles. The author provides an excellent treatment of the subject matter, written from a more generalist perspective, at a substantially lower cost. There are excellent texts covering marine hydrodynamics, vessel dynamics, and ship motion control. However, for some time a void has existed in the literature covering the intersection of these related fields, with the exception of specialist texts such as the treatment of high-speed craft control. Contents This book is presented as two volumes. The first volume is devoted to marine craft hydrodynamics and the second volume of the book is devoted to motion control.

When the ship is caught in heavy seas, there are two manoeuvres that the shipmaster can undertake to avoid excessive ship motion and hull damage: changing course or voluntary speed reduction. This paper presents a study of the effect of the various voluntary speed reduction criteria to attainable speed of ship on seaway. The speed loss is calculated by taking into account wind and wave effect on ship speed, the engine and propeller performance in actual seas as well as the mass inertia of the ship. The attainable ship speed for ship in head, following and beam waves by accounting for voluntary speed reduction is estimated for various significant wave height. The criteria of slamming, deck wetness, propeller emergence, excessive accelerations and roll are taken into account. The impact of variations of the limiting values of certain criteria due to which the captain intentionally reduces the ship speed is analysed and discussed.

Slamming against the wetdeck of a multihull vessel in head sea waves is studied analytically and numerically. The theoretical slamming model is a two-dimensional, asymptotic method valid for small local angles between the undisturbed water surface and the wetdeck. The disturbance of the water surface as well as the local hydroelastic effects in the slamming area are accounted for. The elastic deflections of the wetdeck are expressed in terms of “dry” normal modes. The structural formulation accounts for the shear deformations and the rotatory inertia effects in the wetdeck. The findings of this work indicate that the slamming loads on the wetdeck are significantly influenced by the elasticity of the wetdeck structure.
