Introduction: Stature estimation occupies a relatively dominant position in anthropometric research. It is believed that standards for identifying skeleton differ from population to population and the method for one population may not be applicable for another population. Materials and Method: This study was carried out to determine the reliability of hand dimensions in estimating stature in an adult Cross River State population. The subjects comprised 1050 adult indigenes (540 male and 510 female) of Cross River State between the ages of 18 and 45 years drawn from the three senatorial districts South, Central, and North. Results: Stature in male had a mean value of 168.49 ± 5.53 cm whereas in females it was 162.99 ± 5.91 cm. Also, hand length in male subjects was 19.47 ± 2.00 cm while in females, hand length measured 18.35 ± 1.03 cm. In addition, the mean handbreadth in males was 8.47 ± 0.54 cm while in females, handbreadth was 7.91 ± 0.64 cm. Statistical analysis indicated that the difference in hand length and handbreadth between male and female was statistically significant ( P Conclusion: However, hand length was more reliable in estimating stature in both male and female subjects. These results will be of immense benefit to forensic studies and bioanthropology.

Determination of stature from measurements of hand length and hand breadth; an anthropometric study of kashmiri population

Introduction: This study was carried out to determine the relationship of the index and ring fingers to stature for the purpose of predicting stature in a Nigerian population. Materials and Methods: Measurement of various parameters was done with the aid of a digital stadiometer and a digital Vernier caliper. The stadiometer was used to measure the heights of individuals, while the digital Vernier caliper was used to measure the lengths of the right index (R2D) and right ring (R4D) fingers. Statistical analysis, which included the t-test, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis, was carried out with the aid of SPSS version 19.0. Results: From the results, it can be seen that all parameters investigated were higher in males (P < 0.05) and that the correlations between R2D and stature and between R4D and stature were significant across gender. Our results also showed that it is possible to estimate the stature of an unknown Nigerian from the lengths of the second and fourth digits. Conclusion: Thus, this study has demonstrated a means of identification, especially in case of accident with lacerated remains in Nigeria. This paper is recommended to forensic experts, road safety officers, and the Government of Nigeria for the aforementioned purposes.

Studies on the Estimation of Stature from Hand and Foot Length of an Individual

Original Research Article Introduction: Stature is considered as one of the important parameters for personal identification. So, stature reconstruction is important as it provides forensic anthropological estimation of the height of a person in the living state which plays a vital role in the identification of individual remains. Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of hand length, hand breadth and length of middle finger with height and to show if height could be predicted using these measurements. Methodology: The present study was conducted on a sample of 200 medical students (100 males and 100 females) within the age group of 18-25 years from Government Medical College, Jammu and Indira Gandhi Dental College, Jammu. Results: It was observed that in males the length parameters show greater correlation than the breadth parameters and the highest correlation is shown by the Right Hand Length in males and Left Hand Length in females and lowest correlation is shown by Left Hand Breadth in males and Right Hand Breadth in females. Linear as well as multiple regression equations were also derived from each parameter studied to determine stature from them separately. Conclusion: It is concluded that dimensions of hand provides good reliability in estimation of stature. The highest correlation coefficient between stature and right hand length in males and left hand length in case of females, with lowest standard error of estimate, indicates that comparatively hand length provides highest reliability and accuracy in estimating stature in both males and females. By deriving the population specific linear and multiple regression equations, we can determine the height of a person reliably from the dimensions of hand, provided that the person belongs to the Jammu and Kashmir region.

Anthropometric Measurement of Hand Length, Hand Breadth and Length of Middle Finger and Their Correlation with Stature in J&K Population

Stature (body height) is an important and useful anthropometric parameter for identification of an individual. The aim of the study is to find the correlation between Stature (Length) and measurements from hand and foot dimensions (Hand Length, Hand Breadth, Foot Length and Foot Breadth). 501randomly selected Hausa neonates (zero to 28 days) were measured for each of the parameters. All the parameters showed to correlate with Stature at p < 0.01. Foot Length showed the highest correlation value of 0.75, while Foot Breadth had the least correlation value of 0.43. Hand Breadth and Hand Length also had correlation values of 0.62 and 0.60 respectively. Multiple linear regression equations were formed for each of the parameters. In conclusion, the study has provided regression equations that can be used to estimate stature in Hausa neonates of Kano State origin. Key words : Stature, Hausa neonates, Hand and Foot dimensions.

 Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is an alternative to open surgical repair (OSR) of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) and has a superior short-term safety profile. However recent guidelines have questioned its long-term cost-effectiveness. We retrospectively compared EVAR, Fenestrated EVAR (FEVAR) and OSR of non-ruptured AAA in a tertiary centre over 12 months, to determine whether FEVAR represents an affordable, clinically efficacious option in aortic repair
 
 
 
 Data was collected from the National Vascular Registry and hospital records.73 patients underwent primary elective AAA repair. Patients were followed up for one year post-operatively. The primary outcome was cost per QALY. Secondary outcomes included 30-day mortality and morbidity, aneurysm-related mortality, re-intervention rates, length of hospital stay and all-cause mortality at one year.
 
 
 
 Cost per QALY was calculated as £19134.75, £15408.00 and £12118.16 for FEVAR, EVAR and OSR respectively (FEVAR vs EVAR p= 0.438, FEVAR vs OSR p= 0.001, OSR vs EVAR p= 0.589) OSR was associated with a longer overall hospital and ITU stay, and significantly higher incidence of respiratory complications post-operatively compared to FEVAR and EVAR. FEVAR was associated with significantly higher operative costs, and higher re-intervention and readmission rates compared to EVAR and OSR. There was no significant difference between perioperative and one year mortality between the repair options.
 
 
 
 FEVAR is more expensive than OSR but based on NICE willingness-to-pay thresholds, it still presents a viable alternative for aortic repair, when performed in specialist centres. However, long term data is required to make informed decisions on cost-effectiveness.

O011 An analysis of cost effectiveness and clinical outcomes of elective abdominal aortic aneursym repair in a tertiary centre over one year


 
 
 The ‘Hub and Spoke’ system consists of a leading unit that offers all services (Hub), supported by peripheral units providing less extensive services (Spokes). Cases requiring more complex interventions are often transferred from Spoke Units to the Hub. We wish to shed light on the factors that comprise an ideal Spoke Unit.
 
 
 
 We did a retrospective review of the Peripheral arterial and Venous cases at our Spoke unit, and analysed patient records, took note of the contributions of various specialities and teams within the unit, allowing us to provide optimal care.
 
 
 
 We found that over an 8-month period (5th April 2022- 1st December 2022), the spoke unit undertook 105 lower limb venous procedures, and 55 arterial revascularisations, as day cases. This was possible due to the support we have from the podiatrists, vascular scientists, interventional radiologists, anaesthesiologists, physiotherapists, clinical specialist nurses and allied nursing teams as well as vascular unit managers. In cases where the hub may be overburdened, the Spoke unit can provide support by managing patients within their domain. Our main Hub Unit has an estimated capacity of 70-80 patients per week at any given time. When referrals to the Hub exceed the capacity, the spoke unit supports them to ensure optimal patient care and avoid physician burnout.
 
 
 
 Having a strong multidisciplinary team contributes to an ideal spoke unit. Creating the ideal spoke unit is essential to optimise patient healthcare within a Hub and Spoke system, but also in preventing physician burnout.

 The SHOUT protocol acts as a tool for assessing risk to the airway following anterior neck surgery. While this tool is commonly used in other specialities, we have introduced the protocol for regular use in the post-operative period in carotid surgery.
 
 
 
 The SHOUT protocol was included in the operative notes of all patients undergoing carotid intervention, allowing all members of the post-operative team to be aware of major warning signs. A Retrospective review of all patients undergoing carotid artery intervention between November 2018 and June 2022 was completed.
 
 
 
 A total of 216 patients underwent carotid artery intervention, 100 had intervention before the application of the SHOUT protocol (Group A), all having endarterectomies. 116 patients were treated after the introduction of the protocol (Group B), consisting of 112 endarterectomies and 4 stents. In Group A, 9 patients (9%) required reimaging for urgent neurological symptoms, and 2 (22%) of them had new stroke findings and were managed medically. 3 patients underwent urgent surgical re-intervention; 2 returned to theatre without imaging due to significant hematoma. In Group B, 11 patients (9.4%) required reimaging, 3 (27.2%) had new stroke findings and were managed medically, while only one patient (0.8%) needed surgical re-intervention for haematoma evacuation.
 
 
 
 The SHOUT protocol is a simple tool that aids all members of the post-operative team in the early recognition of potential time-sensitive complications. Early recognition allows for more time to formulate and execute the appropriate management plan.
