In this paper the impact of Ganesh idol immersion o n water quality of Tapi River is discussed, for thi s purpose Ashwanikumar immersion point (Ovara) was selected as sampling station because large number of Ganesh i dols immersed on this Ghat of Tapi River. Water samples were coll ected at morning hours during pre immersion, during immersion and post immersion periods of Ganesh idols. The changes in physico-chemical properties of Tapi River were observed except temperature, pH and DO with minor changes while CO 2, BOD, COD, total alkalinity, total hardness, total calcium, and oil & grease were observed with major changes during immersion period. On the basis of these changes it is concluded that level of water pollution increases in Tapi River du e to these religious activities and causes adverse effect on the aquatic ecosystem. No one can stop these religious activiti es but awareness among the people and society can r educe the pollution.

Impact of Ganesh Idol Immersion Activities on the Water Quality of Tapi River, Surat (Gujarat) India

In the newly developed and old parts of Bangalore city, municipal, domestic and industrial effluents are 
channelized into an open sewerage system. Most of the wells situated within 2 km radius of this open 
sewerage networks were found to be profoundly loaded with total and facal coliform. The average counts of total and facal coliform from the lake samples were 227 and 79 CFU/100 ml, 82 and 14 CFU/100 ml from the open wells and 63 and 34 CFU/100 ml from the bore wells respectively. The level of contamination is beyond the permissible limit for indicator organisms in groundwater during winter season, which can render the consumer more vulnerable to health risks.

Bacteriological assessment of groundwater in Arkavathi and Vrishabhavathi basins, Bangalore, Karnataka

The present communication was report the status of river water quality at Kathiawar peninsula, Gujarat, India was studied. The physicochemical parameters like pH, EC, DO, BOD, alkalinity, hardness, Calcium and Magnesium were analyzed during monsoon and post -monsoon season. Physical parameters like temperature, pH, Conductivity w ere measured on the site by using portable multi parameter analyzer, while chemical parameters were analyzed as per standard methods. The results of the present study have been discussed it is clear that the water is not highly polluted, but the variations in physico-chemical parameters were observed as seasonally. Present study consists of observing changes in physical (temperature and TDS) and chemical changes in water quality (pH, hardness and heavy metal content) due to immersion of idols before, during and after the idol immersion ceremonies in Yamuna River, Delhi during the year 2014. Special emphasis was given on Durga puja festival for which water collected from designated immersion points (Shyam Ghat, ITO, ISBT and Kalindi Kunj ) was analyzed for hardness (magnesium, calcium) and heavy metals (lead, iron, cadmium, nickel, manganese, and chromate). There was significant change in physico-chemical parameters during the time of immersion at each of the immersion site of the Yamuna River. Subsequently, their content decreases due to release of additional fresh water upstream as a part of government’s adaptive measures. Deterioration of ground water quality cannot be stopped and ground water continues to pollute with subsurface sediments. Surface water and groundwater quality are adversely affected by the existing idol immersion practices. [

Effect of idol immersion on water quality of Yamuna River in Delhi and its potential influence on ground water quality

In the civil society different festivals are celebrated, these are the integral part of human life and many of festivals are religious, seasonal change and culturally important. The present study elucidated environmental impact of Ganesh idol immersion on water quality of Tapi River and for this purpose water samples were collected during different durations (pre immersion, during immersion and post immersion) from selected sampling stations or idol immersion points of Tapi River. The important water quality parameters like pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, total hardness, total alkalinity, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, oil & grease and total calcium were analysed for the study. Result shows that dissolved oxygen was depleted while remaining parameter were increased during the idol immersion and it was concluded that aquatic ecosystem of Tapi river was deteriorated and pollution and nutrient load were increased due to these religious activities. The celebration of festivals and these religious activities can’t stop but pollution can reduce to save the river.

The physico-chem and microbiol parameters of water samples from some selected areas of 15 districts in Karnataka were investigated A total of 47 water samples were collected over a period of five months Most of the physico-chem parameters are within the permissible limits of BIS and WHO stds for drinking water However, some samples show pH lower than the normal limit The fluoride content in Hassan district was very high One of the samples from Chitradurga contained very high of Nitrite content than the desirable limit Water samples were subjected to microbiol anal also Some samples were found to be highly contaminated with conforms while some other samples were suitable for human consumption Therefore, it was concluded that a few water samples were unsuitable for drinking purpose [on SciFinder(R)]
