A study was conducted on two thousand five hundred and sixty school children to evaluate the prevalence of hypertension in apparently healthy school children of a prosperous, industrialized city of Punjab. The children belonged to 5-15 years age group of both sexes. The weight (kg) was taken by a standardized weighing machine while height was measured using a calibrated bar. For diagnosing obesity, the body mass index (DM1) was calculated by the formula: Weight (g) Height (cm 2 ) A value of >2.26 was considered as obesity. Blood pressure (BP) measurements were taken by a mercury sphygmomanometer as per the recommendations of American Heart Association. Hypertension was diagnosed if blood pressure was more than 95th percentile for the age. Family history of hypertension was enquired from the parents of children. The BP of the hypertensive children was reassessed after six and nine months.

Stable tracking of body composition is a prerequisite for the long-term effect of preventive measures against obesity and its harmful effects. As BMI tracking estimates reported by individual studies vary considerably, we performed a meta-regression analysis to provide a summary estimate and to assess determinants of BMI tracking. Using the Medline and EMBASE databases, a systematic review was conducted to identify publications reporting correlation coefficients as tracking estimates between BMI at baseline and follow-up measurements and the time interval between these measurements. Additional information recorded included age at baseline measurement, gender, and origin of the studied population. Based on the extracted data, a meta-regression analysis was performed using mixed effects models to account for multiple measurements of the same cohorts. Data on 55,072 individuals (797,094 person-years) extracted from 48 publications with follow-up times between 0.5 and 44 years entered the analysis. The overall estimates for the 1-year tracking correlation coefficient were strong (r = 0.78-0.86 depending on age at baseline measurement) and gradually decreasing over time (0.67-0.78 after 10 years, and 0.27-0.47 after 30 years). Study origin classified by continent was another significant predictor of BMI tracking whereas gender was not. In conclusion, this meta-regression analysis showed a high degree of BMI tracking across all age groups investigated and independent of BMI. Successful prevention in weight control is likely to have long term effects at any age, thereby being beneficial with respect to the associated risks of over- and underweight.

Temporal stability of ambulatory stroke volume and cardiac output measured by impedance cardiography

The objective of this study was to examine associations in youth between antisocial behavior and cardiovascular profile. Younger brothers of adjudicated delinquents (N = 120) received a standardized psychiatric assessment and an assessment of three factors often studied in behavioral cardiology research: family history of hypertension, resting blood pressure, and obesity. As a group, relative to population norms, these youth exhibited signs of obesity and elevated blood pressure, with 30% of the sample appearing clinically obese and 24% having a blood pressure above the 90th percentile for national norms in their age cohort. Within the sample, score on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) Delinquency scale correlated with blood pressure (r = .29-.34) and an index of obesity, weight/height3 (r = .20). Further, scores on the CBCL Delinquency, Aggression, and Externalizing scales were elevated in boys with a positive family history of hypertension. Among boys at risk for delinquency, disruptive psychopathology relates to factors often studied in behavioral cardiology research. Relationships between risk factors for ischemic cardiovascular disease and hostile behavior may be manifested with measures of disruptive psychopathology.
