This note presents the CLIC parameter set as of mid 2005 and describes the different sub-systems, stressing how the design of the different components is driven. This design emerged from a better understanding of limitations for normal conducting accelerating structures, which led to a new optimised design for the CLIC 30 GHz accelerating structure. The structure parameters and improvements in other sub-systems have resulted in a major revision of the parameters. The overall layout and efciencies for CLIC with this updated parameter-set are presented.

One of the major objectives of CTF3 (CLIC Test Facility) is the production of 30 GHz power for the high-gradient testing of CLIC accelerating structures. To this end a dedicated beam line, power generating structure and power transfer line have been designed, installed and commissioned. 52 MW of 30 GHz power with a pulse length of 74 ns and a repetition rate of 16 Hz were delivered to the high-gradient test area. This will allow operation of test accelerating structures in the first CTF3 run of 2005 up to the nominal CLIC accelerating gradient of 150 MV/m and beyond the nominal pulse length. The system is described and the performances of the CTF3 linac, beam line and the rf components are reviewed.

30 GHz Power Production in CTF3

The CLIC/CTF3 collaboration is studying the feasibility of a multi-TeV electron-positron collider, the so-called CLIC: Compact LInear Collider. The idea is to use a two-beam acceleration scheme at an RF frequency around 12 GHz. In this scheme, the RF power to accelerate the main beam is produced by a high current drive beam. To demonstrate the feasibility of this scheme, the CTF3 facility (CLIC Test Facility 3) has been constructed at CERN. Recently, the complex to generate the drive beam has been successfully commissioned producing a beam with a current 28 A. This beam is now being used to test the power production and main beam acceleration according to the two-beam scheme. The results of the test facility provide vital input for the CLIC conceptual design report that is presently being prepared.

The development of the current muon reconstruction in the PANDORAPFANEW particle flow algorithm is presented. First, an introduction to PANDORAPFANEW and a comparision of the signals from muons and pions in the calorimeter is presented. Then, the muon reconstruction algorithm is introduced. Finally, the performance is tested on both isolated muons and muons in high multiplicity events, and found to be adequate. Background signals from beam halo muons are also discussed and possibilities of reconstructing them are suggested.

The unique CLIC Test Facility (CTF3) has been built more than a decade ago to demonstrate the feasibility of the CLIC two beam acceleration scheme. The emphasis was on the high current drive beam generation using a fully loaded highly efficient linac and a complex combination scheme to increase beam current and bunch repetition frequency. This drive beam has been used for deceleration experiments and two beam acceleration. A wealth of relevant results for accelerator physics even beyond CLIC has been obtained and will be presented. The RF to beam efficiency of the linac exceeds 95%, after combination the 28 A drive beam with 12 GHz bunch repetition rate has been used to extract more than 50% of its energy producing 1.3 GW of 12 GHz power as well as performing two beam acceleration at 12 GHz with gradients up to 150 MV/m.

Final Results From the Clic Test Facility (CTF3)

The aim of the CLIC (Compact Linear Collider) Study is to investigate the feasibility of a high luminosity, multi-TeV linear e+e- collider. CLIC is based on a two-beam method, in which a high current drive beam is decelerated to produce 30 GHz RF power needed for high-gradient acceleration of the main beam running parallel to it. To demonstrate the outstanding feasibility issues of the scheme a new CLIC Test Facility, CTF3, is being constructed at CERN by an international collaboration. In its final configuration CTF3 will consist of a 150 MeV drive beam linac followed by a 42 m long delay loop and an 84 m combiner ring. The installation will include a 30 GHz high power test stand, a representative CLIC module and a test decelerator. The first part of the linac was installed and commissioned with beam in 2003. The first issue addressed was the generation and acceleration of a high-current drive beam in the ''full beam loading'' condition where RF power is converted into beam power with an efficiency of more than 90 %. The full beam loading operation was successfully demonstrated with the nominal beam current of 3.5 A.
