Purpose
The purpose of this study was to examine the results of a community-based program addressing the mental health needs of at-risk youth (n = 196) and their families.


Design/methodology/approach
The program served as an alternative to secure detention for youth residing in several rural counties in the southeastern part of the country. Several measures were used to evaluate the program’s effectiveness over a four-year timeframe.


Findings
The multifaceted program produced favorable results in reducing delinquent behaviors and improving relationships within their family.


Practical implications
This study demonstrated that using a multifaceted intervention can be beneficial to juveniles in the juvenile justice system and their families. This study set out to provide services and interventions aimed at reducing re-offending, exploring career development and improving overall family functioning.

This study is original work and is not being submitted elsewhere.


Examination of a community-based, multifaceted program for juvenile offenders and their families

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about social, economic, employment, and educational upheaval. This affected the welfare system and vulnerable families. The aim of this chapter is to analyse the repercussions and impact of the period of confinement on families and their children. The methodology was qualitative, based on in-depth interviews with families whose children were attending highly complex educational centres in the province of Malaga (Spain). Among the main results, it is worth highlighting that the families had certain difficulties in providing educational support for their children, the lack of technological tools, the existence of a digital divide, as well as various problems of family coexistence aggravated by the lack of routines and interpersonal relationships outside the domestic sphere.

Improving Australia’s quality rating and improvement systems for early childhood education and care

Abstract Early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings are pivotal in shaping children's dietary behaviours. While the importance of centre-based nutrition policies (CBNPs) in shaping early childhood nutrition environments is well established, little is known about how these policies are interpreted and implemented by those working in the sector. In particular, limited research has explored the perspectives of both service-level (ECEC employees) and agency-level (health/government organization) stakeholders, which are two groups central to supporting and enacting these policies in practice. This study used a qualitative exploratory design to understand stakeholder experiences and perspectives regarding the implementation of CBNPs and the broader challenges in fostering supportive ECEC nutrition environments. Semi-structured Zoom interviews were conducted with 9 ECEC employees and 10 agency-level representatives across 8 Australian jurisdictions. Interview data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Three overarching themes were identified, reflecting how stakeholders understood the importance of CBNPs and what factors they believed were necessary for successful implementation: (i) the need for realistic rather than idealistic policy requirements, (ii) adaptation as a prerequisite for implementation, and (iii) the value of a multi-faceted approach in creating optimal nutrition environments. Findings point to the need for a multi-faceted approach that combines adaptable guidelines with targeted, practical support such as training and resources, tailored to the realities of ECEC settings. Strengthening partnerships between policymakers, educators, families, and health professionals is critical to supporting the sector and developing feasible strategies that enhance CBNP implementation and promote healthy eating among young children. 

From policy to plate: stakeholder perspectives on nutrition policy in Australian early childhood education environments

A Missed Opportunity? Meal Provision in Early Childhood Education and Care Services in the Context of Socioeconomic Disadvantage

School closures across Australia in response to COVID‐19 have persisted since 2020, with rising mental health problems in children and adolescents, alongside rising negative family health and socioeconomic outcomes. Further, some children and young people who were already experiencing disadvantage pre‐pandemic may be at heightened risk of poorer educational outcomes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature to identify the factors for poorer educational outcomes that may be exacerbated by COVID‐19 amongst disadvantaged school students. Key development stages of disadvantage were identified: young children who started school behind, older students already at risk of disengagement from school and children and young people who have had contact with the child protection system. Five databases were systematically searched, across two search periods. A total of 69 Australian, peer‐reviewed articles, published in 2005–2021, examining risk factors for poor educational outcomes for children attending school met the inclusion criteria and were included in final analyses. Our findings provide evidence of key risk factors that make these populations susceptible to worsening outcomes resulting from the COVID‐19 pandemic, and of the critical importance of ongoing research to guide policy and practice support for these at‐risk groups.
