The stationary and time-resolved photoluminescence spectra of n-pentyl-n′-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) are studied in a mesophase and solid-crystal state. The photoluminescence spectra of 5CB are determined by the molecular configuration and the intramolecular charge transfer in the excited state. It is shown that in the mesophase and solid-crystal state, 5CB exhibits along with monomer radiation at least two types of excimer radiation from different pre-dimer states.

The crystal structures and spectral-luminescence properties of anisoylbenzoylmethanatoboron difluoride (1) and dianisoylmethanatoboron difluoride (2) were studied in the solid state and in solution. The structural features of compounds 1 and 2 are responsible for the occurrence of a new type of excimers in solutions, which differs from that observed in the crystalline state.

The first demonstration of thioester and thiocarbonate binding to gold is provided via steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy of probe molecule adsorption onto a nanoparticle surface Both thioester 1 and thiocarbonate 2 bind noncovalently to gold from aqueous solution, with 2 possessing a greater affinity for the gold surface relative to 1 The surface-bound molecules assemble into high packing densities comprising molecular footprints of 245 ± 10 A2 per molecule Both 1 and 2 deprotect catalytically on the gold surface to yield hydrolysis products and surface-bound thiolate This process is thermally activated and can be described by an Arrhenius-type expression with activation energies of 140 and 167 kcal/mol for 1 and 2, respectively The results presented herein demonstrate the role of gold in catalyzing thioester and thiocarbonate hydrolysis and diversify the synthetic repertoire of organosulfur functional groups that can be used for binding to gold

Steady-State Fluorescence-Based Investigation of the Interaction between Protected Thiols and Gold Nanoparticles

An experimental-computational method is used to investigate the
spectroscopic behavior of naphthalene on the surface of ice
grains. UV vis diffuse reflectance and fluorescence
spectroscopies of naphthalene combined with DFT and ADC(2)
calculations provide evidence for the occurrence of
excited-state associates. The measured and calculated
bathochromic shifts of the So S, electronic transitions related
to naphthalene dimers or naphthalene ice interactions do not
exceed 3 nm. The bands observed in the emission spectrum of
frozen naphthalene solutions are assigned to excited dimers of
different mutual orientations, naphthalene phosphorescence, and
fluorescence of anthracene present as a trace impurity and
populated by the energy transfer from excited naphthalene.
Photochemical reactivity in/on ice and snow is dependent on the
absorption properties and speciation of the compounds present
in these media. Hence, within this study, we exploit frozen
solutions of naphthalene to demonstrate both the absence of
considerable bathochromic shift and a strong tendency to
aggregate.

Spectroscopic Properties of Naphthalene on the Surface of Ice Grains Revisited: A Combined Experimental-Computational Approach.

Studies devoted to excimers in organic systems are surveyed. Processes leading to the excitation of the excimer luminescence are examined. Examples of the excimer-like glow of dimers are described. The relation between the structure of the complexes and their fluorescence properties is demonstrated. The bibliography includes 218 references.
