A system and method are described for establishing a secondary communication channel between an IoT device and a client device. For example, one embodiment of a method comprises: establishing a primary secure communication channel between the IoT device and an IoT service using a primary set of keys; performing a secondary key exchange using the primary secure communication channel, the client device and the IoT device each being provided with a secondary set of keys following the secondary key exchange; detecting that the primary secure communication channel is inoperative; and responsively establishing a secondary secure wireless connection between the client device and the IoT device using the secondary set of keys, the client device being provided with access to data and functions made available by the IoT device over the secondary secure wireless connection.

An apparatus and method are described for adjusting a scan interval or scan width of a BTLE device. For example, one embodiment of a method comprises: placing a Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE) device of an IoT device into a low power or sleep state; waking the BTLE device from the low power or sleep state in response to a specified schedule or set of conditions; attempting to establish a connection between the BTLE device and a BTLE device of an IoT hub using a first scan width and/or scan interval; dynamically adjusting the first scan width and/or scan interval to a second scan width and/or scan interval, respectively, based on a randomly-selected value if a connection is not established after a specified time period; and reattempting to establish a connection between the BTLE device of the IoT device and the BTLE device of the IoT hub using the second scan width and/or scan interval.

Systems and methods are provided for sharing or recreating a state from a mobile device. For example, a mobile application state identifier can include a protocol identifier, a target task component associated with a mobile application executing when the application state identifier is generated and a sub-task component related to a user-interface active in the mobile application when the application state identifier is generated. The application state identifier can also include a user input component reflecting actions taken by a user during execution of the mobile application. A method can include generating, on a first mobile device, an application state identifier and transmitting the application state identifier to a second mobile device, wherein the second mobile device opens a mobile application associated with the target task to a user-interface corresponding to the sub-task component in response to receiving the application state identifier.

For example, one embodiment of a method comprises establishing a secure communication channel between an Internet of Things (IoT) hub and an IoT service using a first secret, the secure communication channel being established through a client device; generating a second secret on the client device and transmitting the second secret to the IoT hub; encrypting a wireless key using the second secret on the client device to generate a first-encrypted key, the wireless key usable to establish a secure communication channel over a local wireless network; transmitting the first-encrypted key to the IoT service; encrypting the first-encrypted key at the IoT service using the first secret to generate a twice-encrypted key; transmitting the twice-encrypted key to the IoT hub over the secure communication channel; decrypting the twice-encrypted key at the IoT hub using the first secret to generate the first-encrypted key and decrypting the first-encrypted key at the IoT hub using the second secret to generate the wireless key; and using the wireless key to establish a secure wireless connection between the IoT hub and the local wireless network.

A registry apparatus is provided for maintaining a device registry of agent devices for communicating with application providing apparatus. The registry comprises authentication information for uniquely authenticating at least one trusted agent device. In response to an authentication request from an agent device, the authentication information for that device is obtained from the registry, and authentication of the agent device is performed. If the authentication is successful, then application key information is transmitted to at least one of the agent device and the application providing apparatus.

A method of bootstrapping between endpoint client and server in a low power wireless network. The method includes the steps of initiating a bootstrap request from an endpoint client to the server with the bootstrap request including an endpoint client name in an identifier, determining a registry apparatus to be assigned to the endpoint client, accepting the bootstrap request at the server and in response to the bootstrap request providing a security object and an identifier to the endpoint client to identify the assigned registry apparatus.
