Because global climate change is intimately linked to culture, anthropologists are strategically well-placed to interpret it, communicate information about it, and act in response to it both in the field and at home. Fieldworkers are increasingly encountering reports of the local effects of climate change from their research partners, and it is becoming apparent that indigenous peoples' recognized capacity for adaptation to change may not be sufficient to cope with these effects. Fieldwork among Viliui Sakha of northeastern Siberia suggests an action-oriented approach to anthropological climate change research that begins by developing cultural models of the local effects of global climate change, goes on to fill in the gaps with Western scientific knowledge, and ends with the dissemination of that information and its use for the development of adaptive strategies, policy recommendations, and advocacy.

The concept of a home-based land use strategy is fundamental for studying recent and prehistoric foraging populations. A proposed datum for the emergence of this behavior is set during later Middle Pleistocene times, around 400–350 kya, and temporally linked with the first established evidence for domestic fire making. Precise causes for this dual appearance remain obscure. Surveying the known Paleolithic record and contexts serves to identify possible factors and processes leading to this development. The emphasis here is on fire technology, particularly domestic fire making and uses, and fire's relationship with home base sensu lato characteristics, as contrasted with a previous land use system that reflects earlier primate patterns. Intentional bush and grassland burning could be components of this home base and domestic fire system. The issue of domestic fire and home base at Locality 1 in Zhoukoudian Cave is evaluated from the perspective of contemporaneous hominid behavior in Eurasia and Africa.

Summary The division of loess deposits into warm/desert and cold/glacial is well entrenched in the literature. The nature and distribution of glacial loess are well accounted for but doubts have been cast on the existence of a true desert loess, i.e. a loess consisting of silt particles actually formed in a desert region. It appears that the loess deposits in Central Asia and North China were formed from silt particles transported out of adjacent deserts — but the particles themselves had their origins in glacial grinding and cold weathering processes in the adjacent mountains. Thus the deserts close to mountainous areas tend to have associated loess deposits. Deserts which are not particularly associated with mountains, e.g. the Sahara and Australian deserts, do not have large loess deposits nearby. Some loess deposits in the Persian/Arabian Gulf region have been observed which consist of silt-sized carbonate particles; a separate division of carbonate loess is proposed. Large scale silt formation is still one of the consequences of glacial action, however it is apparent from recent studies of quartz clasts that glacial grinding is not such an exclusive quartz silt producer as was once proposed. Much coarse-silt-sized quartz is produced directly by weathering of igneous rocks, but there appears to be little doubt that the vast majority of the silt particles for the loess deposits of the world were formed as a consequence of glacial action and cold weathering — and this includes the deposits in Central Asia and North China.
