The activated carbon based electrode materials are promising for applications in supercapacitors, fuel cells, and batteries due to their large surface area and porous structure. All the carbonaceous materials (CNTs, graphene, activated carbon) exhibit EDLCs type behavior based on the adsorption of ions at the electrode interface. On the other hand, the charge storage mechanism of pseudo-capacitive materials, including metal oxides and conducting polymers, is based on the rapid faradic reactions. Owing to this, the latter has a higher level of charge storage than the former, but at the same time, it suffers from a lack of conductivity and lowers cycle stability. To achieve a higher energy density for the supercapacitor without degrading its power density and cycle stability, one of the best solutions is to compound the carbon based materials with pseudocapacitive materials. This review briefly described the various carbon composites with metal oxides, but the main focus is on biomass-derived activated carbon for supercapacitor applications, as the green and sustainable source of energy is the demand of ever increasing global crisis. The ongoing challenges and future developments in this direction for building efficient energy storage systems are also addressed here.

The development of biochar-based composites from biomass and the prospect of developing carbon-based electrodes have attracted considerable attention within the electrochemistry community. Although functional carbon-based materials (e.g. activated carbon, carbon nanotubes/fibers, and graphene) are conventionally used as an electrode in energy storage systems due to their low potential plateau, acceptable capacity, and stable cycling performance, there still are significant disadvantages associated with these materials reliance on fossil fuels and energy-intensive synthesis conditions which make them environmentally harmful and costly. Hence, the conversion of biomass into biochar-based composites with desirable structure (i.e. heteroatom doped, hierarchical porous, interconnected 3D pore network, few-layer graphene, few-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and olive and circular-shaped structures) has recently been introduced as an alternative to conventional electrode active material and successfully enhanced the energy content and mitigated waste management issues. Herein we review and summarize the various physical and chemical modifications for biochar-based composites and compare their electrochemical behaviors in energy storage systems. To the authors' knowledge, there is presently no available literature that concisely summarizes the surface topography and morphology on nitrogen-based 3D interconnected composites.

Biochar-based composites as electrode active materials in hybrid supercapacitors with particular focus on surface topography and morphology

Two state-of-the-art electrodes were successfully synthesized and used to assemble both symmetric and asymmetric type supercapacitors. 3DFAB was fabricated by direct pyrolysis of green macroalgae in the presence of NaOH. Possible NaOH activation mechanisms are proposed, which explains the formation of oxygen functional groups through quick penetration of OH- and NaOH into the vacancies. To obtain CoTLM, the tile-like architecture of cobalt oxides was introduced to the 3D interconnected functional algal biochar (3DFAB) by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method under mild conditions. For the symmetric supercapacitors, the maximum specific capacitance of RAB, 3DFAB, and CoTLM were 158, 296, and 445 F g−1 at the current density of 1 A g−1. Regarding cobalt-based asymmetric systems, the maximum capacitance for the 3DFAB//CoTLM was 411 F g−1. This asymmetric supercapacitor device also retained 100.9% of its initial capacitance after 4000 cycles at the current density of 4 A g−1. Unbuffered aqueous electrolyte and the unique morphological structure used in this study might catapult forward commercialization of such advanced energy storage devices.

Polyaniline-modified renewable biocarbon (ACPANI) composites were prepared via static low-temperature in situ polymerization of aniline monomers on the biomass-based porous biocarbon (AC) that was derived from watermelon rind. In the ACPANI composites, the AC biocarbon was served as a three-dimensional supporting skeleton for polyaniline (PANI) to provide a large accessible surface area, and PANI was used to improve their electrochemical performances. The porous AC biocarbon was coated with nanofibrous arrays of PANI via electrostatic interaction and van der Waals forces. The ACPANI-2 composite that obtained with an AC/aniline mass ratio of 20:80 exhibited an excellent electrochemical performance as a hybrid electrode for supercapacitor. A superb specific capacitance of 520 F g−1 for ACPANI-2 was achieved at a current density of 1 A g−1, and a high cycling stability with a retention rate of capacitance of 71.2% after 5000 cycles was confirmed. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor using ACPANI-2 as a positive electrode assembled with the AC negative electrode acquired a cell voltage of 1.4 V and a high energy density of 29.3 Wh kg−1. Therefore, the ACPANI composite is suggested to be a promising candidate for electrochemical supercapacitor.
