Effect of polyvinyl alcohol concentration on biomedical application of chitosan/bioactive glass composite coated on AZ91D magnesium alloy

High-velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) sprayed coatings can improve the corrosion resistance of bare ASTM SA213-T22 boiler steel. In this report, we have investigated the NiCrMoFeCoAl-30%SiO 2 and NiCrMoFeCoAl-30%Cr 2 O 3 composite coatings were deposited on bare ASTM SA213-T22 boiler steel for corrosion protection. High-temperature corrosion studies were conducted in a molten salt (Na 2 SO 4 -60%V 2 O 5 ) environment at 700ºC under thermo-cyclic conditions. The as-sprayed composite coatings are characterized for microstructure and mechanical properties. The thermo-gravimetric method was utilized to understand the kinetics of corrosion. Characterization of the corrosion products was examined by using scanning electron microscope (SEM)/ Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The obtained results suggest both the composite coatings are favorable to corrosion resistance over the bare ASTM SA213-T22 boiler steel. The NiCrMoFeCoAl-30%Cr 2 O 3 composite coating was concluded to present a superior corrosion resistance in the high-temperature corrosion environment because of the uniform distribution of the composite coating matrix and the development of protective protection Cr 2 O 3 in the scale. The molten salt heat-treated chromium oxide containing coating shows good corrosion stability than the silica composite. This could be attributed to the high temperature assisted formation metal chromates, chromites and oxide layers.

High Temperature Corrosion Behavior of High Velocity Oxy Fuel Sprayed NiCrMoFeCoAl-30%SiO2 and NiCrMoFeCoAl-30%Cr2O3 Composite Coatings on ASTM SA213-T22 Steel in a Coal-fired Boiler Environment

Enhance the surface hardness of materials usually conducted through a hardfacing technique. Hardfacing is popular, whereby materials with better properties are deposited over cheaper bulk material. This work fabricated hard layers by adding titanium (Ti) wire during the welding process. This research used low-carbon steel as the base material, wire optime Ti grade 1 for Ti addition, and an HV 600 electrode with a diameter of 3.2 mm for filler metal. A single-layer weld was conducted with SMAW (positive polarity and 90 A). The samples were directly quenched in a different solution after welding. The properties of the weld layer were examined phase, structure, microstructure, macrostructure, and hardness using optical emission spectroscopy (OES), x-ray diffraction (XRD), an optical microscope, a digital camera, and a hardness device, respectively. Adding titanium (Ti) to the weld layer and quenching the samples after welding in the solution enhances the hardness. This phenomenon is attributed to different phase compositions, oxides, and microstructures. A fine dispersion of small particles and oxide amount is important in increasing hardness. There is no cracking in the weld and base metal. In conclusion, samples BNTiO and BNTiM are recommended for lathe-cutting tools. 

Synthesis of Hard Layer by Titanium Addition During Welding Process and Quenched Directly

The rhizome of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe), usually known as ginger, is one of the most popular species used in food and traditional medicine. Ginger is rich of various hydrophobic and hydrophilic active compounds with diverse properties. Having fresh aroma, pungent taste, and various health benefits, along with being readily available and inexpensive are the advantages of ginger rhizome. In addition to herbal medicine perspective along with utilization as flavoring agent in foods and beverages, ginger rhizome demonstrated potential application in different fields. In this review, the current evidence of main potential applications of ginger, including its usage in preservation of food and food packaging systems, tenderization of meat product, medical properties, acting as an inhibitor of metal corrosion, biodiesel preservation from oxidation, and its role in the synthesis of metal nanoparticles were discussed. Overall, this review provides valuable information about ginger rhizome as a plant-based material, beyond its role in herbal medicine and imparting flavor to our food. 

Potential Applications of Ginger Rhizomes as a Green Biomaterial: A Review

Connective Tissue Graft for Root Coverage

There are several attempts to improve surface characteristics of biomaterials with thick film coatings. In this research, a class of protective coating layers of bi-layered Hydroxyapatite (HA)/Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (with 10, 20, 30 %wt SiO 2 ) were deposited on titanium (Ti) surfaces by plasma spray technique. The surface features of the applied coating layers were evaluated in detail to confirm the effectiveness of the technique for further biomedical applications. The results demonstrated that uniform and bi-layered plasma sprayed coatings can be successfully prepared through the optimization of engineering parameters. Also, it was found that the roughness of the bi-layered coatings increases with increasing the number of coating layers. The corrosion behavior of the coated and uncoated samples was comparatively investigated using electrochemical tests. The measured current densities (i corr ) for HA, (HA)/Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 (with 10, 20, 30 %wt SiO 2 ) were 0.27μA/cm 2 , 0.28 μA/cm 2 , 0.23 μA/cm 2 , 0.79 μA/cm 2 , respectively. According to the results, corrosion resistance of samples with 20% SiO 2 is significantly improved compared to the single-layer HA and bare Ti. The outcomes of FESEM results revealed that porosity and cavities related to evaporation of adhesive PVA and it is confirmed by increasing the percentage of silica to more than 20%, porosity has increased. In conclusion, the proposed coating system showed promising abilities for future biomedical applications. It could be optimized and improved by changing the structural characteristics of the substrate, chemical composition and porosity of the coating layers.

Evaluation of Corrosion Resistance of Bi-layered Plasma-sprayed Coating on Titanium Implants

Background: In the United States, orthodontic therapy has become a common phase in people’s lives. Patients seek treatment for esthetic and functional reasons. As with most treatment modalities, it has its own risks and benefits. Anatomic variations can predispose certain patients to problems. Presenting with a thin gingival tissue biotype, where arch expansion is needed, can predispose the patients for mucogingival defects and bony dehiscences. The purpose of this case report is to present a surgical approach to augment both hard and soft tissue, post orthodontic treatment to manage the resulting dehiscence and prevent potential future recession. Methods: An eighteen year old patient presented to the University of Illinois, College of Dentistry six years after completion of active orthodontics. The lower anterior segment was characterized by a thin gingival tissue biotype, prominent roots and a minimal zone of keratinized tissue. A surgical procedure was performed by placing an allogenic bone graft with subepithelial connective tissue graft and enamel matrix protein. Results: Surgical procedure augmenting hard and soft tissue was completed with uneventful post-operative healing. The goals of increased tissue thickness and prevention of recession were accomplished through this technique and the results were stable after a one year follow up.
