Estimating the value of national sporting success

The European Review of Aging and Physical Activity is a well-established academic journal which has lots of merits for broadening and deepening the body of knowledge with regard to physical activity and aging. On closer inspection, it becomes apparent that most contributions do follow a natural or life science perspective. However, also the social sciences in general and economics and sociology in particular might help in exploring and understanding the relationship between physical activity and aging. This applies for age-related influencing factors on physical activity as well as for age-related effects of physical activity.

Pierre de Coubertin (1863–1937), der als Begrunder der modernen Olympischen Spiele gilt, gab vor den ersten Spielen 1896 in Athen folgende Erklarung ab: „Unser Gedanke, eine seit so vielen Jahrhunderten verschollene Einrichtung wieder aufleben zu lassen, ist folgender: Die Athletik hat eine Bedeutung erhalten, die von Jahr zu Jahr noch zunimmt. Ihre Rolle scheint in der modernen Welt ebenso betrachtlich und ebenso dauerhaft sein zu sollen, wie sie es in der Antike gewesen ist. Auserdem erscheint sie mit neuen Wesenszugen wieder; sie ist international und demokratisch, folglich den Ideen und Bedurfnissen der Gegenwart angepasst. Aber heute wie ehedem wird ihre Wirkung heilsam oder schadlich sein, je nach dem Nutzen, den man aus ihr ziehen, und der Richtung, in die man sie einpendeln wird. Die Athletik kann die edelsten wie die niedrigsten Leidenschaften ins Spiel bringen; sie kann Uneigennutzigkeit und Ehrgefuhl genauso entwickeln wie Geldgier; sie kann ritterlich oder verderbt, mannlich oder roh sein. Schlieslich kann man sie genauso gut verwenden, den Frieden zu festigen wie Krieg vorzubereiten. Discussions about the relationship of sports science to each of its disciplines can be traced back to the years of establishment of sports science. For the comparably young discipline of sports economics these considerations are currently still lacking. Historically, besides applying economic approaches to sports one can also identify non-economic traditions of dealing with economic phenomena in sports. Within both lines of tradition different terms for the phenomena to be examined are used. Reflecting the development of these two lines of tradition of sports economics with respect to the established philosophical positions of Popper’s falsificationism, to Kuhn’s paradigmatic development as a consequence of normal science and scientific revolution, as well as to Lakatos’ methodology of scientific research programs, a number of implications arise for the development status of sports economics as an economic discipline both for its position in relation to sports science and economic science and regarding developments of further theories.
