Enabling the human in the loop: Linked data and knowledge in industrial cyber-physical systems

The purpose of the paper is to understand the developments of the Information Systems (IS) and Information technology, i.e. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the area of Condition Monitoring and Maintenance, especially e-maintenance. Therefore, the paper goes through and categorises the literature findings with the support of two models, i.e. the three era and the IS capability models to analyse and understand the maturity of the ICTs in the domain. The result shows that many researchers are working with software applications that are in the data processing era, which is highly important for the technologies and then the management of IS era. Conversely, both in the Management Information Systems and the Strategic Thinking era fewer findings have been made so far. This should be both an exciting conference and a very enjoyable experience. New York is a center of communications, media, education, finance, and international relations - all areas that are increasingly Web-dependent and Web-intensive. Attendees and special seminars will reflect those interests.The Program Co-Chairs, Marc Najork and Craig Wills, and the superb international Program Committee, have rigorously selected the Refereed Track and Alternate Track papers as well as the Posters. The changing nature of manufacturing, in recent years, is evident in industry’s willingness to adopt network-connected intelligent machines in their factory development plans. A number of joint corporate/government initiatives also describe and encourage the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the operation and management of production lines. Machine learning will have a significant role to play in the delivery of automated and intelligently supported maintenance decision-making systems. While e-maintenance practice provides aframework for internet-connected operation of maintenance practice the advent of IoT has changed the scale of internetworking and new architectures and tools are needed. While advances in sensors and sensor fusion techniques have been significant in recent years, the possibilities brought by IoT create new challenges in the scale of data and its analysis. The development of audit trail style practice for the collection of data and the provision of acomprehensive framework for its processing, analysis and use should be avaluable contribution in addressing the new data analytics challenges for maintenance created by internet connected devices. This paper proposes that further research should be conducted into audit trail collection of maintenance data, allowing future systems to enable ‘Human in the loop’ interactions.

Intelligent decision support for maintenance: an overview and future trends

We outline a new architecture for supporting proactive decision making in manufacturing enterprises. We argue that event monitoring and data processing technologies can be coupled with decision methods effectively providing capabilities for proactive decision-making. We present the main conceptual blocks of the architecture and their role in the realization of the proactive enterprise. We illustrate how the proposed architecture supports decision-making ahead of time on the basis of real-time observations and anticipation of future undesired events by presenting a practical condition-based maintenance scenario in the oil and gas industry. The presented approach provides the technological foundation and can be taken as a blueprint for the further development of a reference architecture for proactive applications.

A Real-Time Architecture for Proactive Decision Making in Manufacturing Enterprises

Industrial asset lifecycle management is facing pressing demands to rationalize asset usage in parallel with meeting production, quality, safety, environment and cost-efficiency constraints. The introduction of enabling technologies, within an e-Maintenance framework is a significant contributor to this end. Among the key relevant technological factors are web-based maintenance services, wireless sensing and identification technologies, data and services integration and interoperability, as well as mobile and contextualized computing. Within such a framework, a layered e-Maintenance architecture is introduced, leveraging upon the strengths of smart and wireless components in order to upgrade the maintenance-services from the low level of operations, to the higher levels of planning and decision making.

The maintenance management function requires staff to possess a truly multidisciplinary set of skills. This includes competencies from engineering and information technology to health and safety, management and finance, while also taking into account the normative and legislative issues. This body of knowledge is rarely readily available within a single university course. The potential of e-learning in this field is significant, as it is a flexible and less costly alternative to conventional training. Furthermore, trainees can follow their own pace, as their available time is often a commodity. This article discusses the development of tools to support competencies development and self-assessment in maintenance management. Based on requirements arising from professional bodies’ guidelines and a user survey, the developed tools implement a dedicated maintenance management training curriculum. Competencies development and self-assessment in maintenance management e-training

Recent advances in industrial production and manufacturing processes as well as the rapidly increasing global competition are key drivers in a growing demand for improving personnel competences in maintenance management. Most employees in the manufacturing sector are beyond the typical age of standard education, thus traditional teaching methods are not sufficient. Vocational Education and Training should be targeted to serve the specific needs for enhancing employable skills and competences. Time and place constraints, which are often a significant concern for professional training, can be mitigated by e-training. This paper presents an overview of the e-learning toolkit employed in the iLearn2Main project, a focused EU collaborative project targeting Maintenance Management Training. The learning toolkit offers customized maintenance management training, while facilitating the standardisation of competencies assessment and learning evaluation. It is based on the Moodle Learning Management System platform and comprises a series of courses on maintenance management, structured in a complete Maintenance Management curriculum, specified by taking into account stakeholder needs. Each course is delivered in short and easily completed sessions, which are followed by comprehension questions, aiming at maximizing learner engagement and understanding. A full set of assessment questions certifies that learners acquire the required knowledge and provides an immediate, reliable and automated way of trainee performance evaluation. The learning toolkit is adequately customised to offer not only interactive training but to seek to steer the learners through individual learning paths, thus offering a more engaging and efficient learning process.
