Vehicle routing problems have been the focus of extensive research over the past sixty years, driven by their economic importance and their theoretical interest. The diversity of applications has motivated the study of a myriad of problem variants with different attributes. In this article, we provide a concise overview of existing and emerging problem variants. Models are typically refined along three lines: considering more relevant objectives and performance metrics, integrating vehicle routing evaluations with other tactical decisions, and capturing fine-grained yet essential aspects of modern supply chains. We organize the main problem attributes within this structured framework. We discuss recent research directions and pinpoint current shortcomings, recent successes, and emerging challenges.

This article explores a structural neighborhood decomposition for arc routing problems, in which the decisions about traversal orientations during services are made optimally as part of neighbor evaluation procedures Using memory structures, bidirectional dynamic programming, and lower bounds, we show that a large neighborhood involving classical moves on the sequences of services along with optimal orientation decisions can be searched in amortized O(1) time per move evaluation instead of O(n) as in previous works Because of its generality and now-reduced complexity, this approach can be efficiently applied to several variants of arc routing problems, extended into large neighborhoods such as ejection chains, and integrated into two classical metaheuristics Our computational experiments lead to solutions of high quality on the main benchmark sets for the capacitated arc routing problem (CARP), the mixed capacitated general routing problem (MCGRP), the periodic CARP, the multidepot CARP, and the min-ma

Node, Edge, Arc Routing and Turn Penalties: Multiple Problems—One Neighborhood Extension

The paper presents a large-scale stochastic road traffic assignment model for the Copenhagen Region. The model considers several classes of passenger cars (different trip purposes), vans and trucks, each with its own utility function on which route choices are based. The utility functions include distributed coefficients (Error Components) estimated on SP-data in a mixed logit model. This was compared with a traditional nested logit model. A number of alternative formulations of EC were tested, and the resulting distributions of value of times are discussed. In application, the different classes and types of vehicles influence all the speed-flow relationships on links within an equilibrium framework. Sub-models for intersections and roundabouts describe queues and geometric delays.

A stochastic route choice model for car travellers in the Copenhagen region

The effective control and management of traffic at intersections is a challenging issue in the transportation system. Various traffic signal management systems have been developed to improve the real-time traffic flow at junctions, but none of them have resulted in a smooth and continuous traffic flow for dealing with congestion at road intersections. Notwithstanding, the procedure of synchronizing traffic signals at nearby intersections is complicated due to numerous borders. In traditional systems, the direction of movement of vehicles, the variation in automobile traffic over time, accidents, the passing of emergency vehicles, and pedestrian crossings are not considered. Therefore, synchronizing the signals over the specific route cannot be addressed. This article explores the key role of real-time traffic signal control (TSC) technology in managing congestion at road junctions within smart cities. In addition, this article provides an insightful discussion on several traffic light synchronization research papers to highlight the practicability of networking of traffic signals of an area. It examines the benefits of synchronizing the traffic signals on various busy routes for the smooth flow of traffic at intersections.

State-of-Art Review of Traffic Light Synchronization for Intelligent Vehicles: Current Status, Challenges, and Emerging Trends

Delays and restrictions in intersections contribute significantly to the overall travel times in urban traffic networks and therefore also affect route choices. In practice, however, it is quite unusual to include intersection delays in traffic models, logistic models and route guidance systems. Time consuming and tedious data preparation together with the complexity of network updating is the main reason for this, as most transportation software applications can do the necessary calculations. In this paper, we report on the development of a procedure that can automate the task of adding data for intersection delay modelling to an existing network. The method requires a GIS-based network with link attributes as input data. The method has developed as an extension tool applicable to existing networks and therefore supply of additional data is normally not required. By a set of ‘expert system rules’, the intersections are classified into a number of groups – such as prioritised and signalised intersections, wedges and Y-junctions – and the required input data for turn delay models is established. The method has been tested on large-scale networks with good results. Most of the required data was satisfactorily estimated, although some edits had to be made manually. This was mainly the case for roundabouts and for intersections with a very special geometry. In conclusion, the method greatly reduced the burden establishing data sets for intersection delay modelling in urban traffic networks.
