. Arabesque is an application for the exploration and geovisualisation of origin-destination flows (or spatial networks), developed within the framework of the Univ. Gustave Eiffel (ex. IFSTTAR)-funded research project geographic flow visualisation (gflowiz) geoflowiz, in collaboration with the CNRS. It allows both the exploration and the filtering of OD data and their representation, with a strong emphasis on geographic information layering and features' semiology. The key-objective is to propose an easy way to produce a modern cartography (a geovisualisation) of thematic flows (e.g. bilateral flow volume), at several geographic scales, even from your own datasets. The objective of this article is to position Arabesque in the range of geoweb applications for producing flow maps, by comparing its functionalities with those of similar web applications – Magrit, Kepler.gl, flowmap.blue – pointing out their respective advantages and limitations. The analysis of its functionalities is compared on the same flow dataset – MOBSCO, i.e. a dataset describing the school mobility of French pupils and students on a given year – for a practical and empirical “validation” of its contributions. We demonstrate that the configurations and appearances of these tools’ visual output depend largely on the culture of their developers, and on the use and audiences for which they have been developed.

This chapter explains that maps are as much scientific objects as they are formidable weapons of communication, because of the techniques and theoretical basis on which they are constructed. It discusses the general challenges of cartographic communication and addresses both the scientific and political aspects of maps. The chapter focuses on the rhetorical aspects mobilized in thematic maps, which make their traceability all the more necessary. It presents a certain number of graphic processes that echo the treated theme, with the aim of increasing the rhetorical power of the maps. Through the use of graphic semiology, statistics or geoprocessing, there are a thousand and one ways to make geographic data speak and transform into graphic discourse. Communication Challenges in Reproducible Multi‐representation

Ce chapitre approfondit la communication cartographique à travers un exercice de multireprésentation cartographique. En conservant un même jeu de donnée de la population mondiale, le chapitre présente et discute une série de 13 cartes différentes afin d’illustrer en quoi la cartographie est avant tout une question de choix et de méthodes.

Enjeux de communication dans la multireprésentation cartographique reproductible

Reproducibility is a core element of the scientific method. In the Geosciences, the insights derived from geodata are frequently communicated through maps, and the computational methods to create these maps vary in their ease of reproduction. In this paper, we present the results from a study where we tried to reproduce the maps included in geoscientific publications. Following a systematic approach, we collected 27 candidate papers and in four cases, we were able to successfully reproduce the maps they contained. We report on the approach we applied, the issues we encountered and the insights we gained while attempting to reproduce the maps. In addition, we provide an initial set of criteria to assess the success of a map reproduction attempt. We also propose some guidelines for improving map reproducibility in geoscientific publications. Our work sheds a light on the current state of map reproducibility in geoscientific papers and can benefit researchers interested in publishing maps in a more reproducible way.

. As any scientific production, maps must be disputed and debated. The implementation of reproducible processes based on free software and open data is essential. In this paper, we demonstrate that this objective can be achieved in the R software ecosystem. In our demonstration, we propose a set of cartographic visualizations based on the example of dead and missing migrants in the Mediterranean over the period 2014–2018. Each representation focuses on one aspect of the phenomenon and the R code used is available. We argue that this multi-visualization contributes to bring new knowledge on the migration debate at European borders and aims at illustrating its geographical complexity.

Reproducible Workflow for Cartography - Migrants Deaths in the Mediterranean

. The article provides an overview of the features of the Magrit web application: a free online thematic mapping tool, presenting a strong pedagogical dimension and making possible to mobilize all the elements necessary for the realization of a thematic map. In this tool, several simple modes of representation are proposed such as proportional maps or choropleth maps. Other, more complex modes are also available such as smoothed maps and cartograms. Each map can be finalized thanks to layout and customization features (projection, scale, orientation, toponyms, etc.) and exported in vector format. Magrit is therefore a complete, light and versatile tool particularly adapted to cartography teaching at the university.
