In nanoscale systems coupled to finite-size reservoirs, the reservoir temperature may fluctuate due to heat exchange between the system and the reservoirs. To date, a stochastic thermodynamic analysis of heat, work, and entropy production in such systems is, however, missing. Here we fill this gap by analyzing a single-level quantum dot tunnel coupled to a finite-size electronic reservoir. The system dynamics is described by a Markovian master equation, depending on the fluctuating temperature of the reservoir. Based on a fluctuation theorem, we identify the appropriate entropy production that results in a thermodynamically consistent statistical description. We illustrate our results by analyzing the work production for a finite-size reservoir Szilard engine.

Stochastic Thermodynamics of a Quantum Dot Coupled to a Finite-Size Reservoir

Abstract Nanomechanical oscillators offer numerous advantages for quantum technologies. Their integration with superconducting qubits shows promise for hardware-efficient quantum error-correction protocols involving superpositions of mechanical coherent states. Limitations of this approach include mechanical decoherence processes, particularly two-level system (TLS) defects, which have been widely studied using classical fields and detectors. In this manuscript, we use a superconducting qubit as a quantum sensor to perform phonon number-resolved measurements on a piezoelectrically coupled phononic crystal cavity. This enables a high-resolution study of mechanical dissipation and dephasing in coherent states of variable size ( $$\bar{n}\simeq 1-10$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mover> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>n</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mo>¯</mml:mo> </mml:mover> <mml:mo>≃</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> <mml:mo>−</mml:mo> <mml:mn>10</mml:mn> </mml:math> phonons). We observe nonexponential relaxation and state size-dependent reduction of the dephasing rate, which we attribute to TLS. Using a numerical model, we reproduce the dissipation signatures (and to a lesser extent, the dephasing signatures) via emission into a small ensemble ( N = 5) of rapidly dephasing TLS. Our findings comprise a detailed examination of TLS-induced phonon decoherence in the quantum regime.

Studying phonon coherence with a quantum sensor

Using a fluxonium qubit with in situ tunability of its Josephson energy, we characterize its energy relaxation at different flux biases as well as different Josephson energy values. The relaxation rate at qubit energy values, ranging more than 1 order of magnitude around the thermal energy ${k}_{B}T$, can be quantitatively explained by a combination of dielectric loss and $1/f$ flux noise with a crossover point. The amplitude of the $1/f$ flux noise is consistent with that extracted from the qubit dephasing measurements at the flux sensitive points. In the dielectric loss dominant regime, the loss is consistent with that arising from the electric dipole interaction with two-level-system (TLS) defects. In particular, by increasing the Josephson energy, thus decreasing the qubit frequency at the flux insensitive spot, we find that the qubit exhibits increasingly weaker coupling to TLS defects, which is desirable for high-fidelity quantum operations. Our work establishes a generic noise model for the design of high coherence fluxonium and future generations of noise resilient superconducting qubits. 

Characterization of Loss Mechanisms in a Fluxonium Qubit

State-of-the-art transmon qubits rely on large capacitors, which systematically improve their coherence due to reduced surface-loss participation. However, this approach increases both the footprint and the parasitic cross-coupling and is ultimately limited by radiation losses---a potential roadblock for scaling up quantum processors to millions of qubits. In this work we present transmon qubits with sizes as low as $36\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}39\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\text{\ensuremath{\mu}}{\mathrm{m}}^{2}$ with $\ensuremath{\gtrsim}100$-nm-wide vacuum-gap capacitors that are micromachined from commercial silicon-on-insulator wafers and shadow evaporated with aluminum. We achieve a vacuum participation ratio up to 99.6% in an in-plane design that is compatible with standard coplanar circuits. Qubit relaxation-time measurements for small gaps with high zero-point electric field variance of up to 22 V/m reveal a double exponential decay indicating comparably strong qubit interaction with long-lived two-level systems. The exceptionally high selectivity of up to 20 dB to the superconductor-vacuum interface allows us to precisely back out the sub-single-photon dielectric loss tangent of aluminum oxide previously exposed to ambient conditions. In terms of future scaling potential, we achieve a ratio of qubit quality factor to a footprint area equal to $20\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}\text{\ensuremath{\mu}}{\mathrm{m}}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$, which is comparable with the highest ${T}_{1}$ devices relying on larger geometries, a value that could improve substantially for lower surface-loss superconductors. 

Compact vacuum-gap transmon qubits: Selective and sensitive probes for superconductor surface losses

Noise within solid-state systems at low temperatures can typically be traced back to material defects. In amorphous materials, these defects are broadly described by the tunneling two-level systems (TLSs) model. TLS have recently taken on further relevance in quantum computing because they dominate the coherence limit of superconducting quantum circuits. Efforts to mitigate TLS impacts have thus far focused on circuit design, material selection, and surface treatments. Our work takes an approach that directly modifies TLS properties. This is achieved by creating an acoustic bandgap that suppresses all microwave-frequency phonons around the operating frequency of a transmon qubit. For embedded TLS strongly coupled to the transmon qubit, we measure a pronounced increase in relaxation time by two orders of magnitude, with the longest T 1 time exceeding 5 milliseconds. Our work opens avenues for studying the physics of highly coherent TLS and methods for mitigating noise within solid-state quantum devices.
