Terrestrial ecosystem and carbon cycle feedbacks will significantly impact future climate, but their responses are highly uncertain. Models and tipping point analyses suggest the tropics and arctic/boreal zone carbon-climate feedbacks could be disproportionately large. In situ observations in those regions are sparse, resulting in high uncertainties in carbon fluxes and fluxes. Key parameters controlling ecosystem carbon responses, such as plant traits, are also sparsely observed in the tropics, with the most diverse biome on the planet treated as a single type in models. We analyzed the spatial distribution of in situ data for carbon fluxes, stocks and plant traits globally and also evaluated the potential of remote sensing to observe these quantities. New satellite data products go beyond indices of greenness and can address spatial sampling gaps for specific ecosystem properties and parameters. Because environmental conditions and access limit in situ observations in tropical and arctic/boreal environments, use of space-based techniques can reduce sampling bias and uncertainty about tipping point feedbacks to climate. To reliably detect change and develop the understanding of ecosystems needed for prediction, significantly, more data are required in critical regions. This need can best be met with a strategic combination of remote and in situ data, with satellite observations providing the dense sampling in space and time required to characterize the heterogeneity of ecosystem structure and function.

Exploring New Multi-Instrument Approaches To Observing Terrestrial Ecosystems And The Carbon Cycle From Space

Significance Carbon uptake by terrestrial ecosystems mitigates the impact of anthropogenic fossil fuel emissions on atmospheric CO2 concentrations, but the strength of this carbon sink is highly sensitive to large-scale extreme climate events. In 2012, the United States experienced the most severe drought since the Dust Bowl period, along with the warmest spring on record. Here, we quantify the impact of this climate anomaly on the carbon cycle. Our results show that warming-induced earlier vegetation activity increased spring carbon uptake, and thus compensated for reduced carbon uptake during the summer drought in 2012. This compensation, however, came at the cost of soil moisture depletion from increased spring evapotranspiration that likely enhanced summer heating through land-atmosphere coupling. The global terrestrial carbon sink offsets one-third of the world’s fossil fuel emissions, but the strength of this sink is highly sensitive to large-scale extreme events. In 2012, the contiguous United States experienced exceptionally warm temperatures and the most severe drought since the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s, resulting in substantial economic damage. It is crucial to understand the dynamics of such events because warmer temperatures and a higher prevalence of drought are projected in a changing climate. Here, we combine an extensive network of direct ecosystem flux measurements with satellite remote sensing and atmospheric inverse modeling to quantify the impact of the warmer spring and summer drought on biosphere-atmosphere carbon and water exchange in 2012. We consistently find that earlier vegetation activity increased spring carbon uptake and compensated for the reduced uptake during the summer drought, which mitigated the impact on net annual carbon uptake. The early phenological development in the Eastern Temperate Forests played a major role for the continental-scale carbon balance in 2012. The warm spring also depleted soil water resources earlier, and thus exacerbated water limitations during summer. Our results show that the detrimental effects of severe summer drought on ecosystem carbon storage can be mitigated by warming-induced increases in spring carbon uptake. However, the results also suggest that the positive carbon cycle effect of warm spring enhances water limitations and can increase summer heating through biosphere–atmosphere feedbacks.

Warm Spring Reduced Carbon Cycle Impact of the 2012 US Summer Drought

Column-averaged dry air mole fraction of atmospheric CO2 (XCO2), obtained by multiple satellite observations since 2003 such as ENVISAT/SCIAMACHY, GOSAT, and OCO-2 satellite, is valuable for understanding the spatio-temporal variations of atmospheric CO2 concentrations which are related to carbon uptake and emissions. In order to construct long-term spatio-temporal continuous XCO2 from multiple satellites with different temporal and spatial periods of observations, we developed a precision-weighted spatio-temporal kriging method for integrating and mapping multi-satellite observed XCO2. The approach integrated XCO2 from different sensors considering differences in vertical sensitivity, overpass time, the field of view, repeat cycle and measurement precision. We produced globally mapped XCO2 (GM-XCO2) with spatial/temporal resolution of 1 × 1 degree every eight days from 2003 to 2016 with corresponding data precision and interpolation uncertainty in each grid. The predicted GM-XCO2 precision improved in most grids compared with conventional spatio-temporal kriging results, especially during the satellites overlapping period (0.3–0.5 ppm). The method showed good reliability with R2 of 0.97 from cross-validation. GM-XCO2 showed good accuracy with a standard deviation of bias from total carbon column observing network (TCCON) measurements of 1.05 ppm. This method has potential applications for integrating and mapping XCO2 or other similar datasets observed from multiple satellite sensors. The resulting GM-XCO2 product may be also used in different carbon cycle research applications with different precision requirements.

Spatio-Temporal Mapping of Multi-Satellite Observed Column Atmospheric CO2 Using Precision-Weighted Kriging Method

Urban vegetation (UV) and its carbon storage capacity are critical for terrestrial carbon cycling and global sustainable development goals (SDGs). With complex spatial distribution, composition and ecological functions, UV is essential for global carbon cycling and climate change. Therefore, improving UV carbon storage capacity modeling is a research hotspot that deserves extensive investigation. However, the uniqueness of UV lead to great challenges in carbon storage modeling, including (1) limitations in data and algorithms due to complex and sensitive urban environments; (2) the severe scarcity of in-city field observation data (e.g., EC towers and field surveys); (3) difficulty in parameter inversion (e.g., canopy height, LAI, etc.); (4) poor transferability when migrating estimation models from natural vegetation to urban scenarios. The progress in carbon storage modeling in urban settings is reviewed, with detailed discussions on carbon storage modeling methods and major challenges. We then propose strategies to overcome existing challenges, including (1) implementing novel and improved remote sensing (RS) techniques (e.g., hyper-spectral, LiDAR, carbon satellites, etc.) to obtain enhanced structural and functional information on UV; (2) improving critical nodes of the earth observation sensor network, especially the distribution of EC towers in urban settings; (3) leveraging “Model-Data Fusion” technology by integrating big earth data with carbon estimation models to reduce the uncertainty in UV carbon storage estimations. This review provides new insights for modeling UV carbon storage and is expected to help the research community to achieve a better understanding of UV towards carbon neutrality. 

Modeling carbon storage in urban vegetation: Progress, challenges, and opportunities

ABSTRACT A global mapping data of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations can help us to better understand the spatiotemporal variations of CO2 and the driving factors of the variations to support the actions for emissions reduction and control. Greenhouse gases satellites that measure atmospheric CO2, such as the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) and Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO-2), have been providing global observations of the column averaged dry-air mole fractions of CO2 (XCO2) since 2009. However, these XCO2 retrievals are irregular in space and time with many gaps. In this paper, we mapped a global spatiotemporally continuous XCO2 dataset (Mapping-XCO2) using the XCO2 retrievals from GOSAT and OCO-2 during the period from April 2009 to December 2020 based on a geostatistical approach that fills those data gaps. The dataset covers a geographic range from 56° S to 65° N and 169° W to 180° E for a 1° grid interval in space and 3-day time interval. The uncertainties of the mapped XCO2 values are generally less than 1.5 parts per million (ppm). The spatiotemporal characteristics of global XCO2 that are revealed by the Mapping-XCO2 are similar to the model data obtained from CarbonTracker. Compared to the ground observations, the overall standard bias is 1.13 ppm. The results indicate that this long-term Mapping-XCO2 dataset can be used to investigate the spatiotemporal variations of global atmospheric XCO2 and can support studies related to the carbon cycle and anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Global land 1° mapping dataset of XCO2 from satellite observations of GOSAT and OCO-2 from 2009 to 2020

Atmospheric CO2 concentrations are sensitive to the effects of climate extremes on carbon sources and sinks of the land biosphere. Therefore, extreme changes of atmospheric CO2 can be used to identify anomalous sources and sinks of carbon. In this study, we develop a spatiotemporal extreme change detection method for atmospheric CO2 concentrations using column-averaged CO2 dry air mole fraction (XCO2) retrieved from the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT) from 1 June 2009 to 31 May 2016. For extreme events identified, we attributed the main drivers using surface environmental parameters, including surface skin temperature, self-calibrating Palmer drought severity index, burned area, and gross primary production (GPP). We also tested the sensitivity of XCO2 response to changing surface CO2 fluxes using model simulations and Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS)-Chem atmospheric transport. Several extreme high XCO2 events are detected around mid-2010 over Eurasia and in early 2016 in the tropics. The magnitudes of extreme XCO2 increases are around 1.5–1.8 ppm in the Northern Hemisphere and 1.2–1.4 ppm in Southern Hemisphere. The spatiotemporal pattern of detected high XCO2 events are similar to patterns of local surface environmental parameter extremes. The extreme high XCO2 events often occurred during periods of increased temperature, severe drought, increased wildfire or reduced GPP. Our sensitivity tests show that the magnitude of detectable anomalies varies with location, for example 25% or larger anomalies in local CO2 emission fluxes are detectable in tropical forest, whereas anomalies must be half again as large in mid-latitudes (~37.5%). In conclusion, we present a method for extreme high XCO2 detection, and large changes in land CO2 fluxes. This provides another tool to monitor large-scale changes in the land carbon sink and potential feedbacks on the climate system.

Detection of Spatiotemporal Extreme Changes in Atmospheric CO2 Concentration Based on Satellite Observations

Using measurements of the column-averaged CO_2 dry air mole fraction (XCO_2) from GOSAT and biosphere parameters, including normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), leaf area index (LAI), gross primary production (GPP), and land surface temperature (LST) from MODIS, this study proposes a data-driven approach to assess the impacts of terrestrial biosphere activities on the seasonal cycle pattern of XCO_2. A unique global land mapping dataset of XCO_2 with a resolution of 1° by 1° in space, and three days in time, from June 2009 to May 2014, which facilitates the assessment at a fine scale, is first produced from GOSAT XCO_2 retrievals. We then conduct a statistical fitting method to obtain the global map of seasonal cycle amplitudes (SCA) of XCO_2 and NDVI, and implement correlation analyses of seasonal variation between XCO_2 and the vegetation parameters. As a result, the spatial distribution of XCO_2 SCA decreases globally with latitude from north to south, which is in good agreement with that of simulated XCO_2 from CarbonTracker. The spatial pattern of XCO_2 SCA corresponds well to the vegetation seasonal activity revealed by NDVI, with a strong correlation coefficient of 0.74 in the northern hemisphere (NH). Some hotspots in the subtropical areas, including Northern India (with SCA of 8.68 ± 0.49 ppm on average) and Central Africa (with SCA of 8.33 ± 0.25 ppm on average), shown by satellite measurements, but missed by model simulations, demonstrate the advantage of satellites in observing the biosphere–atmosphere interactions at local scales. Results from correlation analyses between XCO_2 and NDVI, EVI, LAI, or GPP show a consistent spatial distribution, and NDVI and EVI have stronger negative correlations over all latitudes. This may suggest that NDVI and EVI can be better vegetation parameters in characterizing the seasonal variations of XCO_2 and its driving terrestrial biosphere activities. We, furthermore, present the global distribution of phase lags of XCO_2 compared to NDVI in seasonal variation, which, to our knowledge, is the first such map derived from a completely data-driven approach using satellite observations. The impact of retrieval error of GOSAT data on the mapping data, especially over high-latitude areas, is further discussed. Results from this study provide reference for better understanding the distribution of the strength of carbon sink by terrestrial ecosystems and utilizing remote sensing data in assessing the impact of biosphere–atmosphere interactions on the seasonal cycle pattern of atmospheric CO_2 columns.
