This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. The Design and Analysis of Experiments

Objective To evaluate the history and current knowledge of computer-augmented reality in the field of surgery and its potential goals in education, surgeon training, and patient treatment. Data Sources National Library of Medicine's database and additional library searches. Study Selection Only articles suited to surgical sciences with a well-defined aim of study, methodology, and precise description of outcome were included. Data Synthesis Augmented reality is an effective tool in executing surgical procedures requiring low-performance surgical dexterity; it remains a science determined mainly by stereotactic registration and ergonomics. Strong evidence was found that it is an effective teaching tool for training residents. Weaker evidence was found to suggest a significant influence on surgical outcome, both morbidity and mortality. No evidence of cost-effectiveness was found. Conclusions Augmented reality is a new approach in executing detailed surgical operations. Although its application is in a preliminary stage, further research is needed to evaluate its long-term clinical impact on patients, surgeons, and hospital administrators. Its widespread use and the universal transfer of such technology remains limited until there is a better understanding of registration and ergonomics.

Technology-enhanced learning, employing novel forms of content representation and education service delivery by enhancing the visual perception of the real environment of the user, is favoured by proponents of educational inclusion for learners with physical disabilities. Such an augmented reality computer-mediated learning system has been developed as part of an EU funded research project, namely the CONNECT project. The CONNECT project brings together schools and science centres, and produces novel information and communication technologies based on augmented reality (AR) and web-based streaming and communication, in order to support learning in a variety of settings. The CONNECT AR interactive learning environment can assist users to better contextualize and reinforce their learning in school and in other settings where people learn (i.e. science centres and home). The CONNECT concept and associated technologies encourage users to visit science centres and perform experiments that are not possible in school. They can also build on these experiences back at school and at home with visual augmentations that they are communicated through web-based streaming technology. This paper particularly focuses on a user-centred evaluation approach of human factors and pedagogical aspects of the CONNECT system, as applied to a special needs user group. The main focus of the paper is on highlighting the human factors issues and challenges, in terms of wearability and technology acceptance, while elaborating on some qualitative aspects of the pedagogical effectiveness of the instructional medium that AR technology offers for this group of learners.

Human factors and qualitative pedagogical evaluation of a mobile augmented reality system for science education used by learners with physical disabilities

OBJECT An augmented reality system has been developed for image-guided neurosurgery to project images with regions of interest onto the patient's head, skull, or brain surface in real time. The aim of this study was to evaluate system accuracy and to perform the first intraoperative application. METHODS Images of segmented brain tumors in different localizations and sizes were created in 10 cases and were projected to a head phantom using a video projector. Registration was performed using 5 fiducial markers. After each registration, the distance of the 5 fiducial markers from the visualized tumor borders was measured on the virtual image and on the phantom. The difference was considered a projection error. Moreover, the image projection technique was intraoperatively applied in 5 patients and was compared with a standard navigation system. Augmented reality-guided neurosurgery: accuracy and intraoperative application of an image projection technique.

Mixing 3D computer-generated images with real-scene images seamlessly in augmented reality has many desirable and wide areas of applications such as entertainment, cinematography, design visualization and medical trainings. The challenging task is to make virtual objects blend harmoniously into the real scene and appear as if they are like real. Apart from constructing detailed geometric 3D model representation and obtaining accurate surface properties for virtual objects, adopting real scene lighting information to render virtual objects is another important factor to achieve photorealistic rendering. Such a factor not only improves visual complexity of virtual objects, but also determines the consistency of illumination between the virtual objects and the surrounding real objects in the scene. Conventional rendering techniques such as ray tracing, and radiosity require intensive computation and data preparation to solve the lighting transport equation. Hence, they are less practical for rendering virtual objects in augmented reality, which demands a real-time performance. This work explores an image-based and hardware-based approach to improve photorealism for rendering synthetic objects in augmented reality. It uses a recent technique of image-based lighting, environment illumination maps, and a simple yet practical multi-pass rendering framework for augmented reality.

Augmented reality (AR) is a technology in which a computer-generated image is superimposed onto the user's vision of the real world, giving the user additional information generated from the computer model. This technology is different from virtual reality, in which the user is immersed in a virtual world generated by the computer. Rather, the AR system brings the computer into the "world" of the user by augmenting the real environment with virtual objects. Using an AR system, the user's view of the real world is enhanced. This enhancement may be in the form of labels, 3D rendered models, or shaded modifications. In this article, the authors review some of the research involving AR systems, basic system configurations, image-registration approaches, and technical problems involved with AR technology. They also touch upon the requirements for an interventive AR system, which can help guide surgeons in executing a surgical plan.

In this paper, we present a new image segmentation approach for MRI of the head, which is a semi-automatic process. Unlike automatic segmentation or manual segmentation, the semi-automatic segmentation approach is a robust and interactive segmentation process. This approach carries out 3D volume data segmentation based on 2D image slices. By utilising the user-provided image mask, including areas of interest or structural information, the semi-automatic segmentation process can generate a new segmented volume dataset and structural information. The object based volume visualization method can use this segmented dataset and structural information to perform structure based manipulation and visualization, which cannot be achieved using a normal volume rendering method.
