This article presents a comparison of screw-retained and cement-retained implant prostheses based on the literature. The advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of the 2 different types of restorations are discussed, because it is important to understand the influence of the attachment mechanism on many clinical aspects of implant dentistry. Several factors essential to the long-term success of any implant prosthesis were reviewed with regard to both methods of fixation. These factors include: (1) ease of fabrication and cost, (2) passivity of the framework, (3) retention, (4) occlusion, (5) esthetics, (6) delivery, and (7) retrievability. (More than 50 references).

Acrylic resins are widely used in the fabrication of denture bases and have been shown to be cytotoxic as a result of substances that leach from the resin. The primary eluate is residual monomer. Numerous reports suggest that residual monomer may be responsible for mucosal irritation and sensitization of tissues. This information is important, not only to assess the biologic effects of such materials, but also to enable a comparison among the different polymerization methods, thus assisting the clinician in selecting a material with minimal cytotoxicity. This article reviews the literature published from 1973 to 2000, selected by use of a Medline search, associated with cytotoxic effects usually ascribed to acrylic denture base materials.

Biodegradation of acrylic based resins: a review

Biocompatibility or tissue compatibility describes the ability of a material to perform with an appropriate host response when applied as intended. Poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) based resins are most widely used resins in dentistry, especially in fabrication of dentures and orthodontic appliances. They are considered cytotoxic on account of leaching of various potential toxic substances, most common being residual monomer. Various in vitro and in vivo experiments and cell based studies conducted on acrylic based resins or their leached components have shown them to have cytotoxic effects. They can cause mucosal irritation and tissue sensitization. These studies are not only important to evaluate the long term clinical effect of these materials, but also help in further development of alternate resins. This article reviews information from scientific full articles, reviews, or abstracts published in dental literature, associated with biocompatibility of PMMA resins and it is leached out components. Published materials were searched in dental literature using general and specialist databases, like the PubMED database.

Comparison of bond strength of three adhesives: Composite resin, hybrid GIC, and glass-filled GIC*******

This in vitro study examined the effect of eluate from heat-activated, chemically activated, and microwave-activated denture base resins on cell viability of primary cultures of human gingival fibroblasts. Eluates corresponding to 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours of resin disk immersion were prepared. Fibroblasts were plated at a density of 3 x 10(4) cells in 96-well plates and exposed to a medium containing eluate. After 24 hours, the cytotoxic effect was determined by cellular mitochondrial function. The effect of eluates was compared to control cultures containing culture medium without eluate. Results indicated that at all time periods tested, all three resins leached materials that were cytotoxic to the fibroblasts. Eluate from chemically activated resin disks was more cytotoxic than eluate from heat-activated and microwave-activated disks. In general, cytotoxicity appeared to diminish as disk immersion time was increased. The greatest cytotoxic effect on cell viability was observed with eluates recovered after 24 hours of disk immersion, and the least cytotoxic effect was observed with eluates recovered after 96 hours of immersion.
