Kerry G. Bryant. EFFECT OF MUSIC-INTEGRATED INSTRUCTION ON FIRST GRADERS’ READING FLUENCY (Under the direction of Dr. Mark A. Lamport, Assistant Professor). School of Education, March, 2012. The study examined music-integrated (MI) instruction, framed by automatic information processing theory and elements of prosody. A quasi-experimental, preand posttest design was utilized to ascertain the effect of MI instruction on reading fluency among first grade students. Subjects were students in two public elementary schools in Georgia. To determine the effect of MI instruction on reading fluency scores, independent samples t-tests were employed to compare students’ Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literacy Skills (DIBELS) test scores. Analysis revealed to what degree MI instruction in reading had effect upon two DIBELS indicators, specifically nonsense word fluency (NWF) and phoneme segmentation fluency (PSF) scores. Researching the application of MI instruction to the teaching of reading establishes its potential impact upon academic rigor and pedagogical creativity.

Meeting the Goals of "Te Whariki" through Music in the Early Childhood Curriculum.

The intentional and deliberate provision of music in early childhood settings can establish a foundation of music learning which will continue through primary and secondary education and ensure that what is provided at early childhood level intentionally lays the foundation for life-long music citizenship. This paper proposes to illustrate how the stated 'major obligations' contained in the NSW Curriculum Framework can be realised through the intentional and deliberate provision of music in early childhood settings. This provision provides a foundation upon which creative activities can emerge and engage young children. The paper concludes by offering a cyclical scaffold promoted for teaching music as a Hear - Experience - Learn - Perform (HELP).

The Intentional and Deliberate Provision of Music in Early Childhood Settings in NSW, Australia

While the quantitative trait locus (QTL) on BTA18 associated with paternal calving ease and still-birth in Holstein Friesian cattle and its cross is known for over 20 years now, to our knowledge, no study has yet identified the exact causal mutations. Here, we re-examined the region of this QTL on BTA18 and investigated possible reasons behind elusiveness of the exact causal mutations or genes. Using genotyping data of 2,697 German Holstein cattle, we identified the QTL in the region between 58 and 60 Mbp on BTA18. Subsequently, using WGS data, four SNPs in perfect LD with the QTL haplotype were also identified. Our analyses also revealed the abundance of segmental duplications (SDs) within and around the region of QTL. We hypothesize that the presence of complex SDs could have been the major factor contributing to the alignment-difficulty that we observed in our data and thus, concealing the underlying causal mutations.
