Sex differences in cancer mechanisms.
Joshua B. Rubin,Joseph Lagas,Lauren Broestl,Jasmin Sponagel,Nathan Rockwell,Gina Rhee,Sarah F. Rosen,Si Chen,Robyn S. Klein,P. I. Imoukhuede,Jingqin Luo +10 more
TL;DR: The goal in this review is to cover some of the robust sex differences that exist in core cancer pathways and to make the case for inclusion of sex as a biological variable in all laboratory and clinical cancer research.

p53 mutations exhibit sex specific gain-of-function activity in gliomagenesis
Nathan Rockwell,Wei Yang,Nicole M. Warrington,Malachi Griffith,Obi L. Griffith,Christina A. Gurnett,Barak A. Cohen,Dustin Baldridge,Joshua B. Rubin +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors found that several recurring p53 mutations exhibit a sex-bias in patients with glioblastoma (GBM) and revealed sex differences in each mutation′s ability to transform primary mouse astrocytes.

Cooperative p16 and p21 action protects female astrocytes from transformation
Najla Kfoury,Tao Sun,Kwanha Yu,Nathan Rockwell,Kelsey L. Tinkum,Zongtai Qi,Nicole M. Warrington,Peter R. McDonald,Anuradha Roy,Scott Weir,Carrie A. Mohila,Benjamin Deneen,Joshua B. Rubin +12 more
TL;DR: It is found that upon serum deprivation or etoposide-induced DNA damage, female, but not male GBM astrocytes, respond with increased p16 and p21 activity, and cell cycle arrest, which elucidate mechanisms underlying sex differences in cancer incidence and demonstrate sex-specific effects of cytotoxic and targeted therapeutics.
