Mobile VR HMDs enable scenarios where they are being used in public, excluding all the people in the surrounding (Non-HMD Users) and reducing them to be sole bystanders. We present FaceDisplay, a modified VR HMD consisting of three touch sensitive displays and a depth camera attached to its back. People in the surrounding can perceive the virtual world through the displays and interact with the HMD user via touch or gestures. To further explore the design space of FaceDisplay, we implemented three applications (FruitSlicer, SpaceFace and Conductor) each presenting different sets of aspects of the asymmetric co-located interaction (e.g. gestures vs touch). We conducted an exploratory user study (n=16), observing pairs of people experiencing two of the applications and showing a high level of enjoyment and social interaction with and without an HMD. Based on the findings we derive design considerations for asymmetric co-located VR applications and argue that VR HMDs are currently designed having only the HMD user in mind but should also include Non-HMD Users.

FaceDisplay: Towards Asymmetric Multi-User Interaction for Nomadic Virtual Reality

A method includes determining, at a first time, a representation of a first head rotation of a head mounted display (HMD) (102) using a first inertial sensor sample stream and rendering, at an application processor (204), a texture (132) based on the first head rotation. The method further includes determining, at a second time subsequent to the first time, a representation of a second head rotation of the HMD using a second inertial sensor sample stream having a higher sampling rate than the first inertial sensor sample stream, and generating, at a compositor (224), a rotated representation of the texture (134) based on a difference between the first head rotation and the second head rotation.

Electronic display stabilization for head mounted display

Internet of Things (IoT) applications play a relevant role in today’s industry in sharing diagnostic data with off-site service teams, as well as in enabling reliable predictive maintenance systems. Several interventions scenarios, however, require the physical presence of a human operator: Augmented Reality (AR), together with a broad-band connection, represents a major opportunity to integrate diagnostic data with real-time in-situ acquisitions. Diagnostic information can be shared with remote specialists that are able to monitor and guide maintenance operations from a control room as if they were in place. Furthermore, integrating heterogeneous sensors with AR visualization displays could largely improve operators’ safety in complex and dangerous industrial plants. In this paper, we present a complete setup for a remote assistive maintenance intervention based on 5G networking and tested at a Vodafone Base Transceiver Station (BTS) within the Vodafone 5G Program. Technicians’ safety was improved by means of a lightweight AR Head-Mounted Display (HDM) equipped with a thermal camera and a depth sensor to foresee possible collisions with hot surfaces and dangerous objects, by leveraging the processing power of remote computing paired with the low latency of 5G connection. Field testing confirmed that the proposed approach can be a viable solution for egocentric environment understanding and enables an immersive integration of the obtained augmented data within the real scene.

Advanced Assistive Maintenance Based on Augmented Reality and 5G Networking

Summary form only given. Recently a number of affordable game controllers have been adopted by virtual reality (VR) researchers [1][4]. We present a video1 of a VR demo called TurboTuscany, where we employ such controllers; our demo combines a Kinect controlled full body avatar with Oculus Rift head-mounted-display [2]. We implemented three positional head tracking schemes that use Kinect, Razer Hydra, and PlayStation (PS) Move controllers. In the demo the Kinect tracked avatar can be used to climb ladders, play with soccer balls, and otherwise move or interact with physically simulated objects. PS Move or Razer Hydra controller is used to control locomotion, and for selecting and manipulating objects. Our subjective experience is that the best head tracking immersion is achieved by using Kinect together with PS Move, as the latter is more accurate and responsive while having a large tracking volume. We also noticed that Oculus Rift's orientation tracking has less latency than any of the positional trackers that we used, while Razer Hydra has less latency than PS Move, and Kinect has the largest latency. Besides positional tracking, our demo uses these three trackers to correct the yaw drift of Oculus Rift. TurboTuscany was developed by using our RUIS toolkit, which is a software platform for VR application development [3]. The demo and RUIS toolkit can be downloaded online2.

The Experience of Physical and Social Presence in a Virtual Learning Environment as Impacted by the Affordance of Movement Enabled by Motion Tracking

The ICT Mixed Reality Lab is leveraging an open source philosophy to influence and disrupt industry. Projects spun out of the lab's efforts include the VR2GO smartphone based viewer, the inVerse tablet based viewer, the Socket HMD reference design, the Oculus Rift and the Project Holodeck gaming platforms, a repurposed FOV2GO design with Nokia Lumia phones for a 3D user interface course at Columbia University, and the EventLab's Socket based HMD at the University of Barcelona. A subset of these will be demonstrated. This open approach is providing low cost yet surprisingly compelling immersive experiences.
