TL;DR: In this paper , the porosity of wood and bone is used to influence failure, both in terms of damage growth and fracture nucleation and propagation, and a new design paradigm is introduced to implement bio-mimicking in new artificial materials with brittle behaviour, such as carbide or ceramic foams.
